  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

638 of 638 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 127. Single-panel table, 15 columns (stub + 14), with two spanner groups: "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" over columns 2-5 and "Valid votes cast for unions" over columns 9-12. The crop is page 1 of 3 of this table and ends mid-table: the final transcribed row (Connecticut) is the last row printed on this image, its baseline touching the bottom edge, and the division subtotal that would follow it (New England) is not shown. No footnote text is printed on this crop, although the stub heading carries a superscript 1 marker (footnote text presumably appears on the last page of the table). Apparent misprint as printed, transcribed unchanged: for Nevada, "Total valid votes cast" (159) exceeds "Number of employees eligible to vote" (103). The 159 is nevertheless internally consistent with the rest of the row (61 valid votes for unions + 98 votes for no union = 159) and with the Mountain subtotal (1,265), so the suspect figure is more likely the eligible count of 103, which is itself consistent with the Mountain eligible subtotal of 1,516. Cross-checks performed: every division subtotal row (East North Central, East South Central, Island Areas, Middle Atlantic, Mountain) sums correctly from its member states in all 14 data columns, and in every state row the union/no-union vote split adds to the printed total valid votes cast. No illegible or doubtful cells; the "AFL–CIO" headings are set with an en dash.

p. 128. This is page 2 of 3 of Table 15C; the body is cut off by the crop at both ends. The first division block begins mid-list (Maine), so Connecticut and any earlier New England states appear on the preceding page, yet the "New England" subtotal row (15 elections) is printed here and therefore exceeds the sum of the state rows shown. The last visible row, "Iowa", is the first state of the next (West North Central) division, whose remaining states and subtotal fall below the crop. The stub heading carries a superscript footnote marker 1, but no footnote text is printed on this crop. All printed subtotals for Pacific and South Atlantic reconcile with their state rows as transcribed. The "AFL–CIO" headings use an en dash as printed. No illegible or doubtful cells.

p. 129. The crop is page 3 of 3 of Table 15C, so the West North Central division is split across pages: its subtotal row (31 total elections) is larger than the sum of the six state rows printed here (26), because the division's first state (Iowa, on the previous page) is not on this image. Every other printed subtotal and the grand total are internally consistent with the rows shown, so the discrepancy is a page break, not a reading error. Possible misprint as printed: for Arkansas, "Total valid votes cast" (179) exceeds "Number of employees eligible to vote" (159); the 179 is nevertheless consistent with its own row (114 union votes + 65 no-union votes = 179) and with the West South Central subtotal (550), so it is transcribed as printed. The heading "AFL-CIO unions" is printed broken as "AFL–/CIO unions" with an en-dash-like rule; it is joined here. Note the inconsistent capitalisation in the source: "Other national unions" under the election columns vs. "Other National unions" under the valid-votes columns, both transcribed as printed. All cells are crisp; no illegible or doubtful values.
