  1. 1 Does not include decertification (RD) elections.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce

790 of 790 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 167. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the Connecticut row is the last printed line visible, and the table clearly continues (the New England division subtotal and remaining divisions, plus any footnote text, are not on this image). Footnote markers 1 (on "Elections" in the caption) and 2 (on the stub heading "Division and State") appear, but their footnote texts are not printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Column 15 wraps in the original as "Eligible employ- ees in units choos- ing rep- resentati on"; joined and de-hyphenated to "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". As printed, the "Number of employees eligible to vote" column and the final "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" column carry no digit-grouping commas (e.g. 4833, 14124, 22105, 7570, 13662) while the other value columns do; transcribed exactly as printed, not normalized. The division subtotal rows (East North Central, East South Central, Island Areas, Middle Atlantic, Mountain) are indented in the stub and set off by heavy rules; their labels are kept as printed. All division subtotals and all internal cross-checks (won + no-representative = total elections; union + no-union votes = total valid votes; AFL-CIO + other national + other local = totals) reconcile, and no misprints were detected. No cells were illegible.

p. 168. 15 columns. The caption (excluded) carries footnote marker 1 and the stub heading carries marker 2, but no footnote text is printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Crop boundaries: the page continues a table, so the New England division begins on the previous page. Its subtotal row here (92, 60, 19, 38, 3, 32, 4453, 3,502, ...) exceeds the sum of the five New England states shown (62, 44, 17, 25, 2, 18, 3120, 2,325, ...); the difference is consistent with one missing state (Connecticut) printed on the preceding page, and the implied residuals are internally consistent, so this is not a misprint. The final row (Iowa) is the first state of a new division whose subtotal continues on the following page; its division heading/subtotal is cut off below. Arithmetic checks: every column of the Pacific and South Atlantic subtotal rows equals the sum of the member states listed above it, which corroborates the digit readings in those blocks. Typography as printed: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" column and the final "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" column are set without thousands separators (e.g. 2317, 10093, 15917, 22340, 1531, 5324, 15372), while the adjacent "Total valid votes cast" and "Valid votes cast for unions" columns use commas. Transcribed exactly as printed, not normalized. Values that look anomalous but are transcribed as printed: South Carolina shows 5307 employees eligible to vote against only 883 total valid votes cast and 5237 eligible employees in units choosing representation; Delaware (32) and North Carolina (264) show last-column values far below their eligible-to-vote figures. Both patterns carry through to the South Atlantic subtotal, which sums correctly, so the figures are reproduced as printed. The last column's heading is hyphenated across lines as "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on" and has been rejoined to "Eligible employees in units choosing representation".

p. 169. This is the final page of a continued table, so the body starts mid-division: the "West North Central" subtotal row exceeds the sum of the six States printed above it (e.g. 90 vs 81 total elections, 3,583 vs 3,459 union votes) because Iowa, the division's remaining State, is printed on the preceding page. The "West South Central" subtotal is internally consistent with its four States shown here, and the grand total row covers the whole table, not just this crop. Printed oddity, transcribed as is: for North Dakota the "Total valid votes cast" (351) exceeds the "Number of employees eligible to vote" (345). Formatting as printed: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns omit digit-grouping commas in the State and division rows (2816, 3294, 9771, 1679, 6210, 3231, etc.) but use them in the grand total row (103,310; 59,548). The remaining numeric columns use commas throughout. The last column heading is set with hyphenated line breaks ("Eligible employ- ees in units choos- ing rep- resentati on"); it is joined here as "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". All cells are legible; no doubtful digits.
