  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

801 of 801 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 164. 15 columns. The stub heading carries a superscript 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text appears on this crop; the footnote presumably sits at the foot of the full page below the cropped area. The crop ends immediately after the "Mountain" division subtotal; the table continues on the page(s) that follow (remaining census divisions and the national total are not shown). Digit grouping is inconsistent in the source and is transcribed as printed: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns are set without grouping commas for every state and division row (e.g. 5486, 20204, 11071, 15780), except the last column of the final "Mountain" row, which prints "2,513" with a comma. Two headings were set with end-of-line hyphenation and have been rejoined: "Total elec-tions" -> "Total elections", and "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on" -> "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". All division subtotal rows (East North Central, East South Central, Island Areas, Middle Atlantic, Mountain) were checked against the sum of their member states in every one of the 14 numeric columns and all agree, which supports the column assignments.

p. 165. The crop is cut off at the bottom: Virginia is the last visible row and the South Atlantic division total line (and any further divisions) falls below the crop. The stub heading carries a raised "1" (transcribed as "Division and State^1"), but the footnote text it points to is not printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Two columns are printed without digit-grouping commas throughout ("Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation", e.g. 1744, 12859, 20837, 1809, 12037); this is as printed and has been preserved, while the other value columns do use commas. Possible misprint, transcribed as printed: South Carolina shows 5418 employees eligible to vote but only 987 total valid votes cast and 5264 eligible employees in units choosing representation — an implausibly low turnout relative to the other rows. The vote-split arithmetic in that row is internally consistent (74+536+191=801; 801+186=987), so the anomaly sits in the "eligible to vote" / "eligible employees in units choosing representation" cells. Delaware's last cell (54) is likewise small relative to its 731 eligible employees, but is legible and transcribed as printed. The New England and Pacific division-total rows and every state row reconcile against their component columns (AFL-CIO + other national + other local = Total won; Total won + no-representative = Total elections; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes), which supports the column alignment.

p. 166. The crop is a continuation page ("—Continued"): it opens mid-way through the South Atlantic division, so only West Virginia appears above that division's subtotal line; the division's earlier State rows and all preceding divisions are on the previous page. Indented rows (South Atlantic, West North Central, West South Central, Total, all States and areas) are the printed division subtotals and grand total; their indentation is preserved only as wording, not as extra columns. Apparent misprint, transcribed as printed: for North Dakota the "Total valid votes cast" (368) exceeds the "Number of employees eligible to vote" (366). All other rows are internally consistent — in every row the union subcolumns (AFL-CIO + other national + other local) sum to the union "Total", union total + "Total votes for no union" equals "Total valid votes cast", elections won + elections with no representative equals "Total elections", and each division subtotal equals the sum of its State rows. Digit-grouping commas are printed inconsistently in the source: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns carry no commas in the State and division rows (e.g. 24404, 14359, 8267, 16725, 2108, 4022, 4580) but do in the grand-total row (129,883 and 73,539). Reproduced exactly as printed. The final column heading is broken across lines with hyphens in the original ("Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on") and has been rejoined as "Eligible employees in units choosing representation".
