  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

693 of 693 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 139. The crop cuts the table off after the "Nevada" row; the table continues on the rest of the page (the Mountain division subtotal and later divisions are not shown), and no footnote texts appear on this crop even though the caption carries marker 1 and the stub heading carries marker 2 ("Division and State^2"). Digit-grouping commas are inconsistent in the original: the "All C cases" column prints its four-digit values without commas (1295, 1366, 1319, 4928, 1072, 2409, 1079, 4382) while the adjacent CA, CB and "All cases" columns print commas (3,471, 1,322, 1,547, 1,546). These are transcribed exactly as printed. Every row and column total on this crop cross-checks arithmetically (e.g., Illinois CA..CP sum to 1295; the five East North Central states sum to the division line in all 16 value columns; the Middle Atlantic line likewise), so no misprints are suspected here. The last three columns are headed by a tall two-level heading (e.g., "Union deauthorization cases" with the code "UD" below it); the spanning heading text is repeated in the first two header levels and the code appears in the third.

p. 140. The crop is a continuation page of Table 6A: it begins mid-list (Utah, Wyoming, then the "Mountain" division subtotal) and is cut off at the bottom after "Florida", so the South Atlantic division's remaining states and subtotal, any later divisions, the U.S. total, and the footnote texts for markers 1 and 2 are not on this image. No footnote text is printed below the table here, hence an empty footnotes list. Column structure: 17 columns (stub + 16). Three heading levels; "All cases" and the C/R code headings span the lower two levels, and "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases" span the upper two levels above their codes UD, AC, UC. Typesetting detail transcribed as printed: in the "All C cases" column the four-digit subtotals are printed without digit-grouping commas (Mountain 1383, New England 1201, California 2991, Pacific 4096), while the same magnitudes carry commas in the "All cases" and CA/CB columns (1,586; 1,371; 3,326; 4,697; 1,050; 2,096; 2,951; 1,051). Nothing was normalized. Row labels kept as printed, including the capitalized "Of" in "District Of Columbia" and the indented division subtotal lines "Mountain", "New England", "Pacific". All arithmetic checks are internally consistent: in every row CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP equals the "All C cases" figure, RC+RM+RD equals "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases"; the Pacific line also equals the sum of its listed states in every column. No apparent misprints.

p. 141. The crop is a continuation page: the South Atlantic division's earlier States (and all preceding divisions) are printed on the previous page, so the "South Atlantic" subtotal row (2,801) is much larger than the sum of the six States shown above it here. The "West North Central" and "West South Central" subtotals do reconcile exactly with the States listed above them on this page, and every data row's components sum to its "All cases" figure, as does the grand total row. Typesetting inconsistency, transcribed as printed: three four-digit figures in the "All C cases" column are set without a digit-grouping comma while the rest of the table uses them — "2473" (South Atlantic), "1040" (West North Central) and "1371" (West South Central). The adjacent "All cases" values in those same rows are printed with commas (2,801; 1,251; 1,511). Header structure: the top band spans "Unfair labor practice cases" over the eight columns All C cases through CP and "Representation cases" over All R cases through RD; the stub, "All cases", and each of the last three headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") are tall headings repeated down the levels they span. The third header level carries the printed codes UD, AC and UC, which are ruled off only within those last three columns. All cells were legible; no doubtful digits.
