  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

719 of 719 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 125. 17 columns: stub plus All cases, eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), and UD, AC, UC. The last three columns carry a tall two-line heading (Union deauthorization cases / Amendment of certification cases / Unit clarification cases) with the code (UD, AC, UC) printed in a third band below; All cases and the panel subheadings span that band, so they are repeated in the third header level. The table is cut off by the crop: the body ends mid-section with Arkansas, the first state of Region VI, and the remaining states, the Region VI line and the later regions continue on the following page. The horizontal rule above Arkansas is a section rule, not a total rule. All printed regional totals (Regions I through V) sum correctly from their member states in every one of the 16 numeric columns, and each state's All cases and All C cases figures reconcile with their components, so column alignment is verified arithmetically. No misprints found. Typesetting note, transcribed as printed and not normalized: the region totals in the All C cases column (1272, 4141, 2390, 2773, 5963) and in the All R cases column (1241, 1601) are printed without digit-grouping commas, while the same magnitudes elsewhere in the table (for example 1,502 and 1,787) carry them. The New York row likewise prints 2852 and 1241 without commas beside 1,787 and 1,173 with them. District Of Columbia is printed with a capital O in Of and is kept that way. Leader dots after every row label were dropped. The footnote marker 2 on the stub heading Standard Federal Regions and the marker 1 on the caption year are raised digits; only the stub one appears in the grid, since the caption is excluded.

p. 126. 17 columns. The caption carries a "—Continued" line, and the body is indeed continued from the previous page: the Region VI block begins mid-list (Arkansas, the first Region VI State, is not on this crop), so the "Region VI" subtotal line is larger than the sum of the four States printed above it (e.g. All cases 1,862 vs. 249+119+204+1,096 = 1,668). Every other region subtotal and the grand total do reconcile with the rows shown. Digit-grouping commas are used inconsistently in the original; these cells are printed with no comma and are transcribed exactly as printed: Region VI "All C cases" = 1626, California "All C cases" = 2964, Region IX "All C cases" = 4100, Total "All C cases" = 24724, Total "All R cases" = 4850. Neighbouring values in the same columns (e.g. 1,220; 2,146; 3,083; 18,301; 3,994) do carry commas. Header structure: the three right-hand columns have a separate third heading level holding the case-type codes UD, AC and UC; the stub heading, "All cases", and the headings in the C and R blocks are tall cells that span down into that level, so they are repeated there. The footnote marker "1" sits on the year in the caption (not transcribed); marker "2" is on the stub heading "Standard Federal Regions". No cell was illegible; all values are crisp.
