  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

800 of 800 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. The crop is the first page of the table: it ends after the "Mountain" division subtotal and the table continues onto the following page, so no footnote text is printed on this image even though the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker (transcribed as "Division and State^1"). The table has 15 printed columns. Columns 2-5 sit under the spanner "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" and columns 9-12 under "Valid votes cast for unions"; both spanners have the same four sub-headings (Total / AFL-CIO unions / Other national unions / Other local unions), so the two "Total" sub-columns are distinct. The last column heading is printed broken across lines as "Eligible employ- ees in units choos- ing rep- resentati on"; joined and de-hyphenated it reads "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". Values in that column are printed without digit-grouping commas (e.g. 3580, 15297, 23657) while every other numeric column uses commas; transcribed as printed. Possible misprint, transcribed as printed: in the Utah row the "Total valid votes cast" figure (387) exceeds the "Number of employees eligible to vote" figure (371). Utah's 387 is internally consistent with its own components (180 for unions + 207 for no union = 387) and the Mountain subtotals are consistent with the state figures as printed, so the suspect cell appears to be Utah's eligible-to-vote value of 371. All other internal checks hold: in every row the union sub-columns sum to the union total, union total plus no-union votes equals total valid votes cast, and each division subtotal row equals the sum of its states in all 14 numeric columns. Indented subtotal rows (East North Central, East South Central, Middle Atlantic, Mountain) are transcribed with their labels unindented; leader dots after row labels were dropped.

p. 176. The crop is a continuation page ("—Continued"): 15 columns, headings printed in two levels. The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the footnote text presumably appears on the first page of the table. The three indented rows "New England", "Outlying Areas" and "Pacific" are division subtotal rows (set off by horizontal rules); they are transcribed as printed with their values. All three subtotals were checked against their component states and every one of the 14 columns adds up exactly, so no misprints are suspected. The page ends after the "Pacific" subtotal (double rule), and no grand total row is shown on this crop; the table evidently continues/ends elsewhere. All printed values are crisp and unambiguous; no illegible or doubtful cells.

p. 177. This is a continuation page of Table 15A, carrying the last three census divisions (South Atlantic, West North Central, West South Central) and the grand-total line; the earlier divisions are on preceding pages. The table has 15 columns. Two spanner headings sit over groups of four: "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" over the four columns Total / AFL-CIO unions / Other national unions / Other local unions, and "Valid votes cast for unions" over a second set of the same four sub-headings. The remaining headings are tall single headings spanning both levels and are repeated in each level. Several headings are set with end-of-line hyphenation and have been rejoined: "Total elec-tions" -> "Total elections"; "Number of elec-tions in which no represen-tative was chosen" -> "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen"; "Number of em-ployees eligible to vote" -> "Number of employees eligible to vote"; "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati-on" -> "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" (the last heading is broken awkwardly in the original, ending with a lone "on"). The three divisional subtotal rows (South Atlantic, West North Central, West South Central) are indented in the stub and set off by rules; they are transcribed with their printed labels. I checked each subtotal against the sum of its member states in all 14 numeric columns and every one agrees as printed, which also confirms the otherwise surprising value 6 for South Carolina in the final column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation"). The footnote line at the foot of the page is clipped by the bottom edge of the crop: the descenders of the last line are cut, but the wording is legible and is transcribed in full. No further footnotes are visible.
