  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

589 of 589 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. 15 columns. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text appears on this crop — the footnote is presumably printed at the end of the table on a later page, so `footnotes` is empty. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the New England division's states run Connecticut through Vermont with no "New England" subtotal row shown, and the rest of the table (remaining divisions and any grand total) continues beyond the image. The last visible row, Vermont, sits right at the bottom rule of the crop. The table is divided into division blocks separated by double rules; each block's last row is an indented division subtotal (East North Central, East South Central, Middle Atlantic, Mountain). Every one of those four subtotals was checked against the sum of its member states in all 14 numeric columns and agrees exactly, which corroborates the column assignments. One substantively odd but clearly printed entry: Mississippi shows a single election (Total elections = 1, won by unions = 1, no representative chosen = 0) with 980 employees eligible to vote, 757 valid votes cast, and 980 eligible employees in units choosing representation. It is transcribed as printed and is consistent with the East South Central subtotal. Digit grouping is applied inconsistently in the original: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns print four-digit values without commas (e.g. 1396, 4708, 2557), while "Total valid votes cast", the "Valid votes cast for unions" columns and "Total votes for no union" use commas (e.g. 1,098, 2,104, 1,819). This has been preserved exactly as printed rather than normalized. Heading text was rejoined from hyphenated line breaks: "Total elec-tions" → "Total elections"; "Number of elec-tions in which no rep-resenta-tive was chosen"; "Number of em-ployees eligible to vote"; "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on" → "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" (the last word is split as "resentati / on" in the original). "AFL-CIO unions" retains its genuine hyphen.

p. 176. The crop is a page of a multi-page table: it ends mid-section after "Missouri" (the division containing Iowa/Kansas/Minnesota/Missouri and all later divisions continue on the following page), and the footnote text for the marker "1" on the stub heading "Division and State" is not printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Likewise, the "New England" line at the top is a division-total line whose member states were printed on the preceding page. The last column heading is printed with an awkward break ("choos-ing rep-resentati on"); it is joined here as "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". Digit-grouping commas are used inconsistently by the printer: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns print four-digit values without commas (California 4505 / 2133, Pacific 5897 / 2589, South Atlantic 1787 / 1029), while the adjacent vote columns use commas; all are transcribed exactly as printed. No arithmetic was checked or corrected, but the union sub-columns do add to their totals in every row where they are nonzero.

p. 177. The crop begins in the middle of the table: only the last three States of the West North Central division (Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota) are printed before that division's subtotal, so the West North Central subtotal (42 elections, 1629 eligible employees) is much larger than the sum of the rows shown here; the division's earlier States are on the preceding page. The printed sequence also jumps from the West North Central subtotal straight to Arkansas (West South Central), and from the West South Central subtotal straight to the grand total, so the South Atlantic, East South Central, Mountain and Pacific divisions do not appear on this image — the crop appears to omit intervening blocks of rows rather than the report omitting them. Double horizontal rules set off the two division subtotal rows and the grand total row. Digit-grouping commas are used inconsistently in the source and are transcribed as printed: "1629", "1010", "23722" and "13093" have no comma while "1,431", "1,366", "1,815", "1,011", "19,757", "10,126", "9,162" and "9,631" do. All printed rows are internally consistent (valid votes for unions plus votes for no union equal total valid votes cast; the AFL-CIO/other columns sum to their Totals), so no misprints are suspected. The last column heading is broken across lines as "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on" and has been joined to "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". The stub footnote marker on "Division and State" is a superscript 1.
