Geographic Distribution of Representation Elections Held in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 2000

p. 169. 15 columns. Column headings use two levels: the spanner "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" covers columns 2-5 (Total, AFL-CIO unions, Other national unions, Other local unions) and the spanner "Valid votes cast for unions" covers columns 9-12 (same four sub-headings); all other headings are tall single cells repeated in both levels. Headings broken across lines were joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired ("AFL- CIO" -> "AFL-CIO", "Eligible employ- ees in units choos- ing rep- resentati on" -> "Eligible employees in units choosing representation"). The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop; the crop is a middle page of Table 15A, so the footnote and the remaining divisions (and the US total) appear on other pages. The division rows (East North Central, East South Central, Middle Atlantic, Mountain, New England) are indented subtotal lines set off by rules; divisions appear in alphabetical order by division name rather than the usual census order, so no data is missing between the blocks shown. Verification: every division subtotal equals the sum of its member states in all 14 numeric columns, and within each row the component columns sum to their totals, so the digits and their column assignments are self-consistent throughout. Possible printed anomaly (transcribed as printed, not corrected): Utah shows 1005 under "Number of employees eligible to vote" but 1,014 under "Total valid votes cast" - more valid votes cast than eligible voters. The 1,014 is confirmed by the Mountain subtotal (9,402), and 1005 is confirmed by the Mountain subtotal (10845), so both are as printed. Maine's "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" value of 27 looks small relative to its other figures but is confirmed by the New England subtotal (5363). Digit grouping is inconsistent in the source: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns are printed without thousands commas (e.g. 12985, 24415) while the other count columns use them; this has been reproduced exactly as printed.

The crop is a continuation page: the table body begins mid-list (Puerto Rico) and is cut off at the bottom after the Nebraska row, so the division containing Iowa/Kansas/Minnesota/Missouri/Nebraska (West North Central) has no subtotal row on this image and further rows continue on the following page. The stub heading carries a footnote marker (Division and State^1), but no footnote text is printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. "Outlying Areas", "Pacific" and "South Atlantic" are indented division subtotal rows, set off by heavier rules. Two heading levels are printed; tall headings (the stub, "Total elections", "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast", "Total votes for no union", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation") span both levels and are repeated in each. The last heading is printed hyphen-broken as "Eligible employ- ees in units choos- ing rep- resentati on" and is joined here. Note the inconsistent typesetting of the source: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" columns are printed without digit-grouping commas (e.g. 26236, 13065) while the other value columns use them; transcribed as printed. "District Of Columbia" is printed with a capital "Of". All component columns sum to their printed totals and all three division subtotals sum correctly from their member states, so no misprints are suspected.

This is the final page of a continued table (caption reads "-Continued"), so the body begins mid-list: North Dakota and South Dakota are the last States of the West North Central division, whose earlier States appear on the preceding page; the "West North Central" and "West South Central" rows are division subtotal lines and "Total, all States and areas" is the grand total. Digit grouping is inconsistent in the original and is transcribed as printed: the "Number of employees eligible to vote" column and the "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" column are printed without thousands commas (e.g. 25984, 2260, 2523, 2467, 8029, 15279, 262120; 9324, 1704, 1270, 2617, 6423, 120383), while the neighboring columns use commas. All cells are clearly legible; no doubtful digits.
