558 of 586 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 155. 15 columns, two heading levels. No footnote text is printed on this crop: the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker ("Division and State^1") whose text must appear on a later page of the table. The stub heading itself reads "Division and State" although every row on this page is an industry group, not a division or state; that appears to be a typesetting carryover from the preceding geographic table, and it is transcribed as printed. The first heading group prints "AFL–CIO unions" with an en dash while the "Valid votes cast for unions" group prints "AFL-CIO unions" with a hyphen; both are transcribed as seen. The crop ends just below the "Manufacturing" subtotal rule, so the table continues (nonmanufacturing divisions and the grand total) on following pages. All 14 numeric columns were checked: each sums exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" subtotal, so no misprints are suspected. The indented "Manufacturing" line is a subtotal row, not a section label.

p. 156. 15 columns. The crop is a "—Continued" page of Table 16, so the column headings are reprinted here and are transcribed; the caption and the page number (top left, partly cut off) are omitted. The stub heading carries a superscript footnote marker ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed within the crop — the table body runs to the bottom edge, ending at "Business services", and the remainder of the table plus any footnote block continues below the crop. Hence `footnotes` is empty. Horizontal rules in the body mark industry groupings: the "Mining" line (after "Mining and quarrying of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels)") and the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" line are group subtotal rows, set with a leading indent, and are transcribed as ordinary rows. In the first column group the AFL-CIO subhead appears to be set with an en dash ("AFL–CIO") and in the second group with a hyphen ("AFL-CIO"); both are written with a plain hyphen for consistency. Two apparent coincidences in the "Local and suburban transit and interurban highway passenger transportation" row were checked against the row's internal arithmetic and are as printed: "Valid votes cast for unions — AFL-CIO unions" is 3,140 and "Total votes for no union" is also 3,140 (3,140+76+423=3,639 and 3,639+3,140=6,779). All 26 rows were cross-checked for internal consistency (elections won + none chosen = total elections; union subtypes = union total; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast) and every row balances; no misprints detected.
