  1. 1 See Glossary for definitions of terms.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

730 of 730 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 3 cells break a sum: 'Total, all States and areas', column 2: prints 33,232, the subtotals in rows 'New England' to 'Outlying areas' add to 33,247; 'Total, all States and areas', column 3: prints 27,450, the subtotals in rows 'New England' to 'Outlying areas' add to 27,465; 'Total, all States and areas', column 5: prints 5,611, the subtotals in rows 'New England' to 'Outlying areas' add to 5,626.

Reader’s notes

p. 121. 17 printed columns. The header band has three levels: the top spanning level ("Unfair labor practice cases" over All C/CA/CB/CC/CD/CE/CG/CP; "Representation cases" over All R/RC/RM/RD), a second level with the individual case-type headings, and a bottom level in which only the last three columns carry a ruled sub-heading (UD, AC, UC); the tall headings (stub, "All cases", "All C cases", "CA"…"RD", and the three right-hand case headings) are repeated in every level they span. The crop cuts the table off at the bottom: the body ends mid-region with Delaware and Maryland (the start of the South Atlantic division), whose division subtotal row and the remaining divisions continue on the following page. No footnote texts are printed within the crop, although the stub heading carries a raised "2" marker (its text must be on another part of the page). Section subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are printed indented and are transcribed as ordinary rows. "West North Central" is printed without the trailing leader dots that the other labels carry. All values were cross-checked: for every state row the C-case components sum to "All C cases", the R-case components sum to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases"; each division subtotal also equals the sum of its states in every column. No arithmetic discrepancies were found, and no cell was illegible or doubtful.

p. 122. Continuation page of Table 6A (the caption carries "—Continued"); the table's footnote texts for markers 1 (caption) and 2 (stub heading "Division and State") are printed elsewhere, not on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. The crop begins mid-table: the South Atlantic division's earlier states (Delaware, Maryland, etc.) appear on the preceding page, which is why the "South Atlantic" subtotal (3,679) exceeds the sum of the seven South Atlantic states shown here (3,072); it is transcribed as printed. The table also continues past the bottom rule after the "Mountain" subtotal (Pacific division states are not on this crop). The indented division subtotal rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) are kept in the stub column with their own labels. All other arithmetic checks pass exactly: every state row satisfies All cases = All C + All R + UD + AC + UC, All C = CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP, and All R = RC+RM+RD; the East South Central, West South Central and Mountain subtotals equal the sums of their listed states in every column. No cell was illegible or doubtful.

p. 123. 17 columns: stub plus "All cases"; 8 columns under "Unfair labor practice cases" (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP); 4 under "Representation cases" (All R cases, RC, RM, RD); then three single columns whose two-level headings are "Union deauthorization cases"/UD, "Amendment of certification cases"/AC, "Unit clarification cases"/UC. The stub heading "Division and State^2" and "All cases" are tall headings repeated down the header levels, as are the three right-hand headings over their UD/AC/UC line. This crop is the final page of a continued table ("Table 6A.—Geographic Distribution of Cases Received, Fiscal year 1999^1—Continued"), so it begins mid-table with the Pacific division; earlier divisions are on preceding pages and are not part of this image. The indented rows "Pacific", "Outlying areas" and "Total, all States and areas" are subtotal/total lines set off by horizontal rules. All cells are clearly legible. As an internal check only (nothing was altered), every row sum and every column sum in the image is arithmetically consistent: the six Pacific States sum to the "Pacific" line, Puerto Rico plus Virgin Islands sum to "Outlying areas", and in each row the C, R, UD, AC and UC components sum to "All cases" and the CA-CP components sum to "All C cases". No suspected misprints.
