  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

556 of 560 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 183. The crop cuts the table off after the North Dakota row; the West North Central division is incomplete (no divisional subtotal) and any further divisions and the grand total are not on this image. The stub heading carries a superscript 1, but the footnote text itself falls below the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Scan artifacts that are not part of the data: a stray dot sits in the empty area right of the "New Hampshire" and "Rhode Island" labels, right of "Michigan", and after "Indiana" (transcribed as plain "Indiana"); a stray dot also floats above the "Total valid votes cast" heading. In the Ohio row the "Other local unions" (elections won) cell reads "0" followed by a speck. In the North Dakota row the "AFL-CIO unions" cell under "Valid votes cast for unions" is printed as a dash-like speck followed by 0; I read it as 0, which is consistent with that row's total of 146 = 0 + 0 + 146. All printed subtotals (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central) add correctly from their member states in every column, and valid-votes rows reconcile (union total + no-union votes = total valid votes cast), so no misprints are suspected in the portion shown. North Dakota's 412 eligible employees for a single election is unusually large but is internally consistent (146 + 192 = 338) and is transcribed as printed.

p. 184. The crop is a continuation page: it begins mid-table (the West North Central division's last states) and ends mid-division after Colorado, so the Mountain division's remaining states and its subtotal line are cut off below. No footnote text is printed on this crop, although the stub heading carries the marker 1 ("Division and State^1"). Doubtful cells: Kansas, last column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation") reads as a single digit "8"; given Kansas has 1 union win and 80 eligible employees, the value may be a partly inked or clipped two-digit figure, but it is transcribed as printed. Kansas also has Total elections 4 = 1 won + 3 none chosen, consistent. Two stray ink specks appear in the scan and are not transcribed: one in the left margin just before the "South Atlantic" label, and one between the "Total" and "AFL-CIO unions" columns on the "East South Central" row. A small stray dot also appears above the "Total" heading within the "Valid votes cast for unions" span. Subtotal rows (West North Central, South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) are set off by double rules; their labels are indented in the stub and transcribed without the indent. Note that the West North Central subtotal covers states listed on the preceding page as well as the three shown here, so it does not sum the visible rows alone.

p. 185. Continuation page of Table 15C: the body begins mid-way through the Mountain division (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and the earlier divisions are on the preceding page), so the "Mountain" subtotal (14 elections, 1,061 eligible, 987 in units choosing representation) is larger than the four Mountain states printed here. "Mountain", "Pacific" and "Outlying Areas" are indented division-subtotal rows; "Total, all States and areas" is the grand total. Guam: the last column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation") is blank in the print while every other cell in that row is a printed 0; transcribed as "". The Pacific subtotal of 898 equals 162+156+548+0+32, consistent with Guam contributing nothing there. Row labels transcribed as printed: "Perto Rico" (almost certainly a misprint or a dropped "u" for "Puerto Rico" in this degraded scan) and "Virgin Island" (singular). The 1998 scan loses most small punctuation: the periods in "U.S." in footnote 1 and any terminal period are not visible, so the footnote is given without them. The heading reads "AFL–CIO unions" with an en dash in print; written here with a plain hyphen. A stray ink speck sits between the "Total" and "AFL-CIO unions" cells in the Arizona row; it is not a digit or a footnote marker. Internal checks pass throughout (union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast in every row; AFL-CIO + other national + other local = Total in both panels of columns; 147 + 309 = 456), which supports the column assignment.
