  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

803 of 804 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Connecticut', column 3: prints 57, columns 4 to 6 add to 63; 'New England', column 5: prints 6, rows 'Maine' to 'Connecticut' add to 12.

Reader’s notes

p. 180. The table has 15 columns. The stub heading "Division and State" carries a superscript 1 footnote marker, but no footnote text is printed within this crop; the footnote presumably appears at the foot of the full page or at the end of the table's continuation, outside the crop. Crop is incomplete: the table ends after the "West North Central" division subtotal, closed by a double rule. Only four of the nine census divisions (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) appear here; the remaining divisions and any grand total continue on a following page. Suspected misprint, Connecticut row, "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions / Other national unions" column: transcribed as printed as 6, but the row does not reconcile — 50 (AFL-CIO) + 6 (other national) + 7 (other local) = 63, against the printed row Total of 57. The column also fails to reconcile at the division level: the six New England states as printed sum to 12 in that column (Massachusetts 6 + Connecticut 6), against the printed "New England" subtotal of 6. Both discrepancies would resolve if the Connecticut cell were 0 rather than 6. The glyph reads as a 6 on two passes of the scan, so it is transcribed as printed; a reader should treat this single cell as doubtful. Every other cell in the New England block reconciles, including Connecticut's valid-votes breakdown (2,176 + 31 + 738 = 2,945) and the total elections identity (57 + 34 = 91). All other division subtotals were checked against their member states across all 14 numeric columns and reconcile exactly: Middle Atlantic, East North Central, and West North Central agree in every column, as does New England in its other 13 columns. In the "New England" subtotal row there is a small stray ink mark between the "Total votes for no union" value (7,095) and the "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" value (8,620), sitting just inside the latter column's rule. It is a scanning artifact or a broken rule segment, not a digit or a footnote marker, and has not been transcribed. A similar isolated speck appears in the left margin beside the Michigan row, also ignored. The last column heading is printed broken across lines as "Eligible employ-/ees in/units/choos-/ing rep-/resentati/on"; the end-of-line hyphens have been repaired to "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". The scan's degraded dot accents make many "i" characters in the headings render faintly (e.g. "Division", "which", "unions"); these are ordinary letters and have been transcribed normally.

p. 181. Continuation page of Table 15B (15 columns). The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop; it appears on the table's first page. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the Mountain division's state rows (Montana through Nevada) are printed, but that division's summary/total line and any later divisions fall below the crop. No column headings are missing — both heading levels are present. Stray ink/specks, read as not part of the values: a dot before "19" in Alabama / AFL-CIO unions (elections won); a mark before "3" in Wyoming / Number of elections in which no representative was chosen; a dot in the blank area right of "Maryland"; a dot after "South Carolina"; a tick under the "A" of "Arkansas". All three division total rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) were checked against their member states and against the internal identities (union votes = AFL-CIO + other national + other local; total valid votes = union votes + votes for no union); every one agrees, so no misprints are suspected in the transcribed figures.

p. 182. The crop is a continuation page: the body opens with the division-total row "Mountain" (its member States are on the preceding page), then the Pacific division's States and total, then the outlying areas and the grand total. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed. Transcription details and possible printing problems: - Row label "Perto Rico" is transcribed exactly as printed; it is almost certainly a misprint for "Puerto Rico". - "Virgin Island" is printed in the singular, as transcribed. - Last column heading is broken across lines as "Eligible employ-ees in units choos-ing rep-resentati on"; joined to "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". - Guam row, "Other local unions" (elections won) column: the printed 0 is followed by a small stray ink mark that looks like a raised dot; it does not match any footnote marker on the page, so it is treated as a speck and the cell is given as 0. - Washington row has a stray period in the stub area after the label; not transcribed. - Guam, last column: "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" = 84, noticeably smaller than Guam's 680 total valid votes and 238 union votes; printed clearly as 84 and transcribed as printed (its union win was presumably a small unit). - Checks that do hold as printed: Pacific elections 114+50+371+28+42+4 = 609; Pacific won 58+24+209+15+21+1 = 328; Outlying Areas 45+7 = 52 and 29+5 = 34. Nothing was computed or corrected.
