Reader’s notes

p. 154. The crop shows only the first part of the table: it ends with the Region IV total line, and the remaining regions (V onward) and the grand total continue on the following page. No footnote texts are printed on this crop, although footnote marker 1 appears on the caption and marker 2 on the stub heading "Standard Federal Regions"; their texts must be elsewhere. Header structure: 17 columns. "All cases" is a tall heading occupying the full header height and is repeated in all three levels; "Unfair labor practice cases" spans the eight columns All C cases through CP; "Representation cases" spans All R cases through RD; the three right-hand headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") are tall headings sitting above their code lines UD, AC and UC. Scan specks, not footnote markers or digits: a stray dot precedes 816 in the Connecticut "All cases" cell; a small mark follows 12 in the Puerto Rico "RD" cell; a small mark follows 2 in the Florida "CD" cell; stray dots also appear in the blank stub area beside "New Hampshire" and "Florida". These were read as dirt and omitted. All arithmetic checks pass as transcribed: in every row the C subtypes sum to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sums to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases"; each Region line also equals the sum of its member states, column by column. No misprints detected.

p. 155. This crop is a continuation page ("—Continued" in the caption): it begins mid-table with the Region V states and ends after the Region VIII subtotal, so the Regions I–IV rows above and Regions IX–X plus any grand total below are on other pages. No footnote text is printed under the table on this crop, although footnote marker 1 appears in the caption and marker 2 on the stub heading "Standard Federal Regions"; their texts must be on the page where the table starts. The stub column is visually indented in two steps (state names flush left, "Region V"/"Region VI"/"Region VII"/"Region VIII" subtotal labels indented to the middle of the stub), but there is no column rule dividing the stub, so it is transcribed as a single column. The three rightmost column headings are hyphenated across printed lines ("Union deauthor-ization cases", "Amend-ment of certifica-tion cases", "Unit clari-fication cases") and have been rejoined. Scanning artifacts, not transcribed: a stray mark after "2,046" on the Michigan row (All cases), a short dash before "327" on the Ohio row (All R cases), a stray dot before "3" on the Ohio row (CP), and assorted small specks in the blank right half of the stub (Indiana, Texas, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota rows and below the Region VIII line). Every arithmetic relation in the grid checks out as transcribed: for each state row the C-case detail columns (CA through CP) sum to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sum to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases"; each Region subtotal row equals the sum of its member states in all 16 numeric columns. No printed figure appears to be a misprint.

p. 156. 17 printed columns. The headings have three levels: the spanner row (All cases / Unfair labor practice cases / Representation cases / Union deauthorization cases / Amendment of certification cases / Unit clarification cases), the column-name row, and a third level that prints only the case-type codes UD, AC and UC under the last three columns; the taller heading cells (stub, All cases, All C cases, CA...RD) are repeated down into the levels they span, as instructed. This is a continuation page: the crop begins mid-table with the Region IX states (Regions I through VIII and their state rows are on earlier pages). "Region IX" and "Region X" are indented subtotal rows; "Total, all States and areas" is the grand total for the whole table. Every figure was checked against its neighbours and all cross-foot exactly: each state row's All C cases equals CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP, All R cases equals RC+RM+RD, and All cases equals All C + All R + UD + AC + UC; the Region IX and Region X lines equal the sums of their states. No misprints detected and no doubtful or illegible cells. Faint stray ink marks sit in the blank stub area beside the California row and beside the Idaho row (scanner speckle, not printed content), and another speck sits between the two footnote lines; they are not transcribed.
