1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case."

p. 168. Column count is 12: stub plus 5 "Number of proceedings" columns, 4 "Percentages" columns, and 2 cumulative (July 5, 1935-Sept. 30, 1997) columns. The stub column carries no printed heading on this page, so cell 0 of each heading level is empty. Many cells are printed as a dash rule (em-dash/"----"); these are transcribed as "" per instruction. They occur throughout the percentage columns and the two cumulative columns for the rows "Proceedings decided by U.S. courts of appeals", "On petitions for contempt", "Total Court Orders" and the four court-order detail rows, and in the four percentage columns for the Supreme Court block. Footnote markers 2 (on "Board dismissal" in the Number of proceedings panel) and 3 (on "Proceedings decided by U.S. Supreme Court") have no visible footnote text: the crop ends partway through the footnote block, cutting off footnote 2 (only a fragment of its first line, beginning roughly "2 Ch...", is visible at the very bottom edge) and omitting footnote 3 entirely. Scan quality is good but speckled; a few stray ink marks sit between columns (e.g. near the "Board dismissal" column on several Supreme Court rows, and a tick after "45" in the Number column of "Board orders set aside" under the Supreme Court block). These were read as scan artifacts, not as digits or footnote markers. Row labels in the original are indented at three levels to show hierarchy; the indentation is not reproduced in the stub text. No arithmetic was checked against or imposed on the printed figures, but as transcribed the component rows do sum to their totals in every column.
