  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

789 of 789 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 155. 15 columns: stub + "Total elections" + 4 columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" + 3 tall single columns + 4 columns under "Valid votes cast for unions" + 2 tall single columns. Two header levels; the tall headings are repeated in both levels. The crop ends immediately below the "West North Central" subtotal and its double rule — the table continues (South Atlantic and later divisions, plus any United States total) on following pages, and no footnote text is printed on this image even though the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker ("Division and State^1"). The division subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are indented in the stub; their labels are transcribed without the indentation. Every subtotal was checked against the sum of its state rows in all 14 numeric columns and all of them agree exactly, which supports the column alignment. In "AFL-CIO" the hyphen is rendered by the scan as a wavy/tilde-like mark in both heading occurrences; transcribed as a plain hyphen. Stray ink specks sit next to some digits (e.g. the New York "Other national unions" election cell, the Missouri "Total votes for no union" cell, and the Kansas "Other national unions" valid-votes cell, which reads 0); these were read as printer dirt, not as decimal points or footnote markers.

p. 156. Single panel, 15 columns. The crop is a continuation page ("—Continued") and is cut off at the bottom: the last eight rows (Montana through Nevada) are the Mountain division states, but the "Mountain" subtotal line that would follow Nevada falls below the crop, as does any further body and the footnote block. The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Only the three division subtotal lines that are printed (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) appear as rows; the divisions have no separate printed section-label rows, and the blank spacer lines between groups are not transcribed as rows. "AFL-CIO" is printed with an en-dash-style rule between AFL and CIO; transcribed with a plain hyphen. Verification: every row is internally consistent as printed — total elections = elections won by unions + elections with no representative; the union subtotal = AFL-CIO + other national + other local in both the elections block and the valid-votes block; total valid votes cast = valid votes for unions + total votes for no union. Each of the three division subtotals also sums exactly from its member states in all 14 value columns. No suspected misprints and no doubtful or illegible cells.

p. 157. This is a continuation page (caption ends "—Continued"), so the first body row, the "Mountain" division total, appears without its member States, which are printed on the preceding page; likewise the Pacific and Outlying Areas blocks are the division subtotals for the State rows printed above each of them on this page. Column headings are printed on this crop and are transcribed as the two printed levels. The heading printed "AFL–CIO" uses an en dash; it is transcribed as "AFL-CIO". In the Mountain row, the "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions" cell shows a stray ink speck before the figure (printed ".196"); the value is 196. Every internal sum checks out: the four won-by-union columns sum to their "Total", Total won plus "no representative chosen" equals Total elections, the four union-vote columns sum to their "Total", and union votes plus votes for no union equal Total valid votes cast — for each State row, for the Pacific and Outlying Areas subtotals (which also equal the sums of their State rows), for the Mountain line, and for the grand total. No misprints detected.
