  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

792 of 792 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 152. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the table continues past the "West North Central" subtotal (the South Atlantic and later divisions are not on this image), and no footnote text is printed on this crop even though the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker. Stray ink marks (scan speckle, not characters): a small mark left of the word "Division" in the stub heading; a mark just before "10" in Nebraska's "Total elections" cell; a faint dot before "86" (Michigan) and before "0" (Michigan, Other national unions); and a dot before "1,845" (Nebraska, last column). All of these are read as noise and are not transcribed. The division subtotal rows ("New England", "Middle Atlantic", "East North Central", "West North Central") are printed indented and set off by rules; I verified every column of all four subtotals against the sum of their member states and all 56 checks agree, so column alignment and digits are confirmed arithmetically. The AFL-CIO heading is printed with an en-dash-like hyphen ("AFL–CIO"); transcribed as "AFL-CIO unions".

p. 153. The crop is a continuation page (caption reads "—Continued"), so it starts mid-table with the South Atlantic division and no grand-total rows. The stub heading carries a superscript 1 marker, but no footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. The bottom of the crop cuts the Mountain division short: the eight Mountain states (Montana through Nevada) are printed, but the "Mountain" subtotal line that would follow them is not on this image. Blank stub cells for the divisional subtotal rows (which are indented and centred in the print) have been given their printed labels: "South Atlantic", "East South Central", "West South Central". Column headings "AFL-CIO unions" are printed with the hyphen broken across lines ("AFL_ / CIO / unions") and have been rejoined. All values were cross-checked arithmetically and are internally consistent: for every state row, won + no-representative = total elections, union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast, and the three union sub-columns sum to the union total; the three divisional subtotals also equal the sums of their member states in all 14 numeric columns. No misprints detected. A small stray ink mark (resembling an apostrophe) sits in the rule between the "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees..." columns on the Idaho line; it is a speck/artifact, not a digit or footnote marker, and has been ignored. The Arkansas "Other national unions"/AFL-CIO cells show a faint speck before "6" that is likewise a scanning artifact.

p. 154. Continuation page of Table 15A: 15 columns (stub + 14 numeric). The first body line, "Mountain", is a division summary line whose member States are printed on the preceding page, so it appears here without its detail rows; likewise the Pacific and Outlying Areas summary lines follow their indented State rows. Indentation of summary lines (Mountain, Pacific, Outlying Areas, Total) is not preserved in the grid, but their labels are as printed. All values are crisp; internal checks all reconcile (Pacific = Washington+Oregon+California+Alaska+Hawaii+Guam in every column; Outlying Areas = Puerto Rico + Virgin Islands in every column; union Total = AFL-CIO + Other national + Other local in every row), which supports the digit readings. Stray ink specks appear in the stub under the heading and to the right of some numbers (e.g., after Oregon's "28", beside Washington's "196", Pacific's "10,546", California's "0" in the Guam row area); these are scanning artifacts, not digits or footnote markers.
