  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

748 of 748 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 126. The crop is cut off at the bottom: "District of Columbia" is the last row visible (its cell text sits right at the lower edge of the image), and the remainder of the South Atlantic division, all later divisions/regions, any grand-total row, and the footnote texts for markers 1 and 2 are not on this image. Footnote marker 1 appears in the caption (excluded per instructions) and marker 2 on the stub heading "Division and State"; no footnote text is printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Column structure: 17 columns — stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), then UD, AC and UC. The group labels "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases" are printed as tall single headings above the codes UD, AC and UC respectively, so they are repeated in both heading levels for those columns; "All cases" and the stub heading likewise span both levels. The division subtotal lines (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are printed indented and set off by rules; they are transcribed as ordinary rows with their own values. All values were checked arithmetically: every state row's CA–CP components sum to its All C cases, RC+RM+RD sum to All R cases, and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals All cases; each division subtotal equals the sum of its states in every column. No misprints or internal inconsistencies were found.

p. 127. 17 columns. The last three columns are headed by a tall group label over a single code: "Union deauthorization cases" over UD, "Amendment of certification cases" over AC, "Unit clarification cases" over UC; these are rendered as two header levels like the rest of the grid. The stub heading "Division and State^2" and "All cases" are tall single headings repeated in both levels. This is a continuation page ("—Continued"): the South Atlantic division subtotal (4,413) covers states listed on the preceding page (Delaware, Maryland, District of Columbia, etc.) that are not printed on this crop, so the South Atlantic column figures exceed the sum of the six states shown here. The East South Central, West South Central and Mountain blocks are complete and every row and column in them foots exactly to the printed totals; all six South Atlantic state rows also foot across correctly. Footnote markers 1 (in the caption, excluded) and 2 (on "Division and State") are referenced, but no footnote text is printed within this crop — presumably it appears on the first page of the table. The table is cut off after the Mountain subtotal row; further divisions continue on the next page. Scan noise: stray specks appear in several cells (e.g. a dot before "491" in the Virginia "All cases" cell, near "0" in Idaho UD, and in Colorado AC); these were read as artifacts, not digits or markers. Values throughout are right-aligned in their columns and were assigned by column rule.

p. 128. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), and three single columns headed UD, AC and UC under the tall spanners "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases". Those three spanners sit one band lower than "Unfair labor practice cases"/"Representation cases", but they occupy the same level of the hierarchy, so they are given in the top heading row and their codes (UD, AC, UC) in the second. This is a continuation page (the caption carries "—Continued"), so the rows begin mid-table with the Pacific division; the states above Washington are on the preceding page. Footnote marker 1 is attached to the caption year ("Fiscal Year 1996^1"), which is excluded from the grid, so footnote 1 has no anchor among the transcribed cells; marker 2 is on the stub heading. Blank vertical gaps separate the Pacific block, the outlying-areas block and the grand total; they are spacing, not printed rows, so no empty rows were added. Row labels "Pacific", "Outlying areas" and "Total, all States and areas" are printed indented as subtotal/total lines; the indentation is not reproduced in the cell text. All values were checked for internal consistency and every one balances: each state row's All C cases equals CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP, All R cases equals RC+RM+RD, and All cases equals All C + All R + UD + AC + UC; the Pacific and Outlying-areas subtotals equal the sums of their member rows; and the grand total is internally consistent (33,107+5,248+113+22+278 = 38,768). No misprints detected. Print quality is good throughout; a stray ink mark appears under the stub heading and small specks over some leader-dot rows, but no digit was ambiguous.
