  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

573 of 573 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. The crop is a partial page: the table is cut off immediately after the "North Dakota" row (the West North Central block and all remaining divisions, plus the U.S. total and the printed footnote text, are not on this image). The stub heading carries a superscript 1, but the footnote it points to is below the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Column structure: 15 columns — stub, "Total elections", four columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" (Total / AFL-CIO unions / Other national unions / Other local unions), "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast", four columns under "Valid votes cast for unions" (same four sub-headings), "Total votes for no union", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". Doubtful/scan-artifact cells: Indiana, last column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation") reads 57 with a stray underscore-like mark beneath it; I read the value as 57 with no footnote marker. A small stray comma-shaped speck sits above the "Total valid votes cast" heading and another beside the Minnesota row between the "AFL-CIO unions" and "Other national unions" vote columns; both appear to be scanning dirt, not printed characters. Verification: all four division subtotal rows shown (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central) foot exactly to their member states in every numeric column as transcribed; no misprints detected in the visible portion.

p. 176. Continuation page: the table begins on an earlier page, so no footnote texts are printed on this crop (the marker 1 on the stub heading "Division and State" refers to a footnote printed elsewhere). The crop is also cut off at the bottom — the Mountain division rows end mid-division at Wyoming, with more states/divisions on the following page. The caption line at the very top is clipped and was omitted as instructed. The indented division lines (West North Central, South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) are division total rows set off by double rules; the earlier states of the West North Central division appear on the preceding page, which is why its totals exceed the sum of the three states shown here (e.g. "Other local unions" = 9 with 0 in every state listed). Doubtful marks: North Carolina, "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen" prints as "1" followed by a short stray dash ("1-"); read as 1, which reconciles with that row's total of 1 election. South Carolina, "Number of employees eligible to vote" shows a small stray tick after "361"; read as 361, which reconciles with the South Atlantic total of 1,840. Both marks appear to be scan/print artifacts rather than footnote markers. All division totals on this page cross-check against the component states and against the internal identities (total elections = won + no representative; total valid votes = union votes + no-union votes; union total = AFL-CIO + other national + other local), so no misprints are suspected.

p. 177. This image is a "—Continued" page: the table starts on an earlier page, so the Mountain division's leading states (Montana, Idaho, Wyoming) are not on this crop. Consequently the "Mountain" subtotal row is larger than the sum of the five Mountain states shown here (e.g. total elections 24 vs. 19 for Colorado–Nevada); this is expected, not a misprint. The Pacific, Outlying Areas and grand-total rows are internally consistent with the rows printed above them, and in every row the "Total valid votes cast" column equals union votes plus votes for no union, so the column alignment is well corroborated. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed; the stub heading "Division and State" carries footnote marker 1. The AFL-CIO heading is set with an en-dash-like rule between "AFL" and "CIO"; transcribed as a hyphen.
