  1. 1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case."

50 of 59 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 156. Crop boundaries: the caption line at the top is clipped (excluded anyway), and the footnote block at the bottom is cut off after footnote 1 — only the top sliver of the line beginning "2" is visible and it is illegible, and footnote 3 (marker on "Proceedings decided by U.S Supreme Court^3") is not visible at all. Only footnote 1 is reported. The table has no printed stub heading; the stub column is blank in the header band, so header cell 0 is "" at every level. "July 5, 1935–Sept. 30, 1994" is a tall heading spanning the first two header levels and is repeated there; "Total" sits only in the third level under "Number of proceedings". Em-dash rules (long dashes) fill the percentage cells and the two right-hand columns where no value is printed; these are rendered as "" per the dash-rule convention. They are not blanks in the original — e.g. the entire Percentages block and both 1935–1994 columns are dashed on the "Proceedings decided by U.S. courts of appeals" row. Row label as printed reads "Proceedings decided by U.S Supreme Court" — no period after the second "S", unlike "U.S. courts of appeals" above it. Transcribed as printed; likely a typesetting slip. Doubtful glyphs, all resolved by the column arithmetic: (a) "Court orders holding respondent in contempt", Vs. unions only — the digit is printed thin and reads like a lowercase "i"; it is 1 (0+1+0+2+0 = 3, the printed subtotal). (b) "Contempt cases enforced", Percent column — the decimal point is nearly dropped by the scan, printing as "0 4"; transcribed as 0.4, confirmed because the eight Supreme Court percentages then sum to 100.0 and the 1 of 253 cases matches 0.4. (c) "Board orders set aside" (courts of appeals), Number column — a stray ink speck sits just right of 1,446; it is not a footnote marker or punctuation. A small stray mark sits above "Percent" in the last heading cell; it is a scan artifact, not a footnote marker. No arithmetic was computed into any cell — the sums above were used only as verification. All printed totals are internally consistent: 142 = 89+15+11+6+21, 128 = 79+14+11+6+18, 162 = 142+20, 20 = 3+12+0+4+1, 10,659 = 7,023+1,444+529+217+1,446, 253 = 152+18+45+19+16+1+1+1, and both Percent columns sum to 100.0. No misprints detected in the numeric body.
