  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

594 of 594 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 146. The crop cuts the table off at the bottom: it ends with North Dakota, mid-way through the West North Central division (no divisional subtotal for that group, and no further divisions/U.S. total, are shown on this image). The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Minor image artifacts, none affecting a reading: a stray ink dot sits in the blank stub-heading area below "Division and State", and a small stray mark appears just to the left of the New Jersey value 311 in the "Total votes for no union" column (the digits themselves are clear). All values are otherwise crisp; divisional subtotals as printed are internally consistent with their member states.

p. 147. The crop is a continuation page (the caption line, only partly visible at the very top, ends in "—Continued") and it is cut off at the bottom: the last printed row, New Mexico, is clipped mid-line and the Mountain division's remaining states, its division subtotal, and all following divisions are not on this image. The table opens mid-list as well — South Dakota is the first row shown, with the earlier West North Central states on the preceding page — so the subtotal rows (West North Central, South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) are division totals whose components are only partly visible here. No footnote text is printed on this crop; the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker (transcribed as "Division and State^1") whose note appears elsewhere in the table. Division subtotal rows are printed without indentation of their own kind (they are centered/indented in the stub) and carry no separate label such as "Total"; their wording is transcribed exactly as the division name. Internal arithmetic checks out where it can be tested (e.g. Texas 231 + 101 = 332; Louisiana 349 + 115 = 464; the four "valid votes cast for unions" components sum to the division subtotals), so no suspected misprints. All cells were legible; the scan is slightly speckled in the leader-dot area but no digit was doubtful.

p. 148. This is a continuation page: the caption line at the top is cut off by the crop, so only the column headings and body are transcribed. The table is a single panel of 15 columns. The crop also clips the bottom of the footnote text; the characters are still legible and the footnote is transcribed in full as printed. Two printing specks that are not digits or footnote markers: a small dot sits in the "Total votes for no union" column of the Utah row, just left of the 0; and a small apostrophe-like mark sits just right of the 0 in the "Total valid votes cast" column of the Guam row. Both cells are transcribed as 0. Row-label indentation distinguishes the division subtotal rows (Mountain, Pacific, Outlying Areas) and the grand total from the State rows; indentation is not preserved in the cell text. Nothing was computed or corrected. Note for the reader that the Nevada row prints 0 in the final column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation") while printing 6 elections, 167 eligible employees and 0 elections won by unions, which is internally consistent; and the Mountain subtotal's component columns (AFL-CIO 325 + other national 137 + other local 0 = 462) match its printed total. The "AFL-CIO" headings are printed with a short dash between AFL and CIO; rendered here as a plain hyphen.
