  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

789 of 789 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 143. The crop is the first page of the table: it ends after the "West North Central" division line, so the remaining divisions (South Atlantic onward), the U.S. total line, and the printed footnote text all fall outside the image. The stub heading carries a superscript "1" marker, but footnote 1's text is not printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. The division lines (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are indented subtotal rows set off by horizontal rules; their labels are transcribed without the indent. A small stray ink dot sits in the stub to the left of "East North Central"; it is a scanning artifact, not a footnote marker. Every column of all four division subtotals was checked against the sum of its member states and all 14 columns agree in all four divisions, so the grid's column alignment and digits are well corroborated. The scan renders many dotted i's as dotless (e.g. "Dıvısıon", "Ohıo", "unıons"); these are reproduced with normal spelling. "AFL–CIO" is printed with an en dash and broken across lines ("AFL- CIO"); written as "AFL-CIO unions".

p. 144. This crop is a continuation page of Table 15B (the caption carries "—Continued"), so it shows only the South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central and Mountain divisions; preceding divisions are on earlier pages and the Pacific division and U.S. total continue past the bottom rule. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this page, so `footnotes` is empty. The division rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) are indented subtotal lines printed inside the body rules; they are transcribed as ordinary rows. Blank spacing lines separating each division block from its subtotal are not printed rows and are not included. All 15 columns are clearly ruled and every division subtotal reproduces exactly the sum of its member states in all 14 numeric columns, and each state row is internally consistent (Total elections = union wins + no-representative; union wins = AFL-CIO + other national + other local; total valid votes = votes for unions + votes for no union). No illegible or doubtful cells; no apparent misprints. The row label printed as "Wyomıng" etc. reflects the scan's dotless-i artifacts throughout the page (also "Dıstrıct", "unıons", "Valıd" in headings); labels and headings are transcribed with normal spelling.

p. 145. This crop is a continuation page: it begins mid-table with the Pacific division's States, so the New England through Mountain divisions that precede them are on earlier pages. The column headings are reprinted in full on this page, so they are transcribed here. All of the arithmetic on the page is internally consistent as transcribed (each State's union-won columns sum to its "Total", total + no-representative = total elections, the three union vote columns sum to the union "Total", and union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast; the Pacific, Outlying Areas, and grand-total lines also check out), which supports the column assignment of every figure. Minor scan artifacts, none affecting the values: a stray tick mark sits just right of the "13" in the "Outlying Areas" row, between the AFL-CIO and Other-national-unions columns; it is printing dirt, not a digit or footnote marker. A similar stray dot appears above the stub heading and left of the caption. The Guam row (all zeros) is set in the same bold face as the other State lines and is a data row, not a total.
