  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 Source: Standard Industrial Classification, Statistical Policy Division, Office of Management and Budget, Washington, D.C., 1972.

657 of 658 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Educational services', column 2: prints 282, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 283; 'Services', column 17: prints 152, rows 'Hotels, rooming hous' to 'Miscellaneous servic' add to 153.

Reader’s notes

p. 112. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", 8 unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), 4 representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), and UD, AC, UC. The stub and "All cases" are tall headings spanning all three printed heading levels; "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases" span the top two levels, with UD/AC/UC printed on the third. The crop is cut off at the bottom: "Retail trade" is the last fully printed body row and the table clearly continues onto further rows (and any footnotes, including the one keyed to the superscript 2 on "Industrial group", are below the crop and not visible). The caption line at the top is also clipped and was omitted as instructed. Scan artifacts, not footnote markers: a small raised dot sits above the "CE" heading and a short raised dash above the "CG" heading in the second heading level; a stray speck appears just left of "340" in the "All cases" column of the "Ship and boat building and repairing" row. None were transcribed. Every value was cross-checked arithmetically and the table is internally consistent: in each row All C cases = CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP, All R cases = RC+RM+RD, and All cases = All C + All R + UD + AC + UC; the "Manufacturing" and "Mining" lines equal the sums of their member rows in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected.

p. 113. Continuation page: the table starts on an earlier page, but the column headings are reprinted in full on this crop, so they are transcribed here. Doubtful cell: "Educational services", column UC (last column). I read the printed glyph as 4, and that is what is transcribed, but two internal checks point to 3: (a) the row's own components sum to 236 + 42 + 0 + 1 + UC, which equals the printed "All cases" value of 282 only if UC = 3; (b) the UC column of the 14 detail service rows sums to 152 (the printed "Services" subtotal) only if UC = 3, otherwise 153. The digit is small and the scan is coarse, so this may be a misread on my part rather than a misprint in the source. Every other cell on the page is arithmetically consistent: each detail row's C components sum to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sum to "All R cases", All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases", and the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities", "Services", "Public administration" and "Total, all industrial groups" lines agree with their columns (the Total line also cross-foots across its own row). Layout: the first two rows ("Finance, insurance, and real estate", "U.S. Postal Service") and the lines "Transportation, communication, and other utilities", "Services", "Public administration" and "Total, all industrial groups" are printed indented as group/summary lines, set off by horizontal rules; the remaining rows are left-flush detail lines. Indentation is not representable in the grid. Wrapped labels joined and end-of-line hyphens repaired: "Local and suburban transit and interurban highway pas-senger transportation"; "Transportation, communication, and other utilities"; "Museums, art galleries, and botanical and zoological gar-dens". Wrapped headings likewise: "Union de-authoriza-tion cases", "Amendment of certifi-cation cases", "Unit clar-ification cases". The scan renders many dotted "i" characters faintly (e.g. "Industrial", "Unfair", "Communication"); the words are transcribed with normal spelling.
