  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

591 of 592 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 4 cells break a sum: 'South Carolina', column 3: prints 1, columns 4 to 6 add to 0; 'South Carolina', column 10: prints 204, columns 11 to 13 add to 44; 'South Atlantic', column 4: prints 12, rows 'Delaware' to 'Florida' add to 11; 'South Atlantic', column 11: prints 696, rows 'Delaware' to 'Florida' add to 536.

Reader’s notes

p. 165. The crop cuts the table off in mid-page: the body ends at North Dakota, which is part way through the West North Central division (no divisional subtotal for it appears, and the remaining divisions and the table's grand total are on the continuation). The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but the footnote text is not printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. A small stray ink speck sits just left of the Pennsylvania value in the "AFL-CIO unions" column under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions"; the printed value there is 5 and the speck is not a digit or footnote marker. All divisional subtotals shown (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central) add up exactly from their component states in every one of the 14 numeric columns, which supports the column alignment.

p. 166. Continuation page: the table begins on an earlier page, so the rows above "South Dakota" (the earlier census divisions and the first states of the West North Central division) are not on this crop. The crop is also cut off at the bottom: the Mountain division's remaining states (after New Mexico) and that division's subtotal line fall below the image edge. The indented rows "West North Central", "South Atlantic", "East South Central" and "West South Central" are division subtotal lines, set off by rules. Doubtful cells, both in the "South Carolina" row: 1) "Valid votes cast for unions / AFL-CIO unions" reads as a two-digit "44" in the scan, but it is internally inconsistent: the row's union total is 204 with zeros in the other-national and other-local columns, and the South Atlantic subtotal of 696 less the other eight states' AFL-CIO values (492) leaves exactly 204. The printed glyphs look like "44", so "44" is transcribed as seen; the intended value is very likely 204 (either a misprint in the original or two leading digits lost in the scan). 2) "Number of elections ... won by unions / AFL-CIO unions" reads as "0" while the row's Total won is 1 and the other two union subcolumns are 0; the South Atlantic subtotal (12 Total, 12 AFL-CIO) implies this cell should be 1. Transcribed as the printed "0". The footnote marker 1 on the stub heading "Division and State" is printed here, but no footnote text appears on this crop (it is on the first page of the table). A stray ink mark resembling an apostrophe precedes the "South Atlantic" subtotal label in the scan; it is a scanning artifact and is not transcribed. Row labels are followed by leader dots, which have been dropped.

p. 167. This is a continuation page (caption reads "—Continued"), so the body begins mid-division: the Mountain division's earlier States (and all preceding divisions) are on the prior page, which is why the Mountain subtotal (29 elections) exceeds the sum of the three Mountain States shown here (Arizona 3 + Utah 1 + Nevada 6 = 10). The Pacific subtotal row and the "Total, all States and areas" row were checked and are internally consistent as printed: every Pacific column equals the sum of its six States, and in the total row 165 + 366 = 531, 158 + 1 + 6 = 165, 8,610 + 113 + 864 = 9,587, and 9,587 + 11,961 = 21,548. The subtotal rows "Mountain", "Pacific" and "Outlying Areas" are printed indented under their States, as is the final total row. The scan's typeface drops the dots on several lowercase i's (e.g. the stub labels for Arizona, California and Hawaii, and headings such as "elections", "unions"); these are read as ordinary i's. The table's 15 columns are all fully within the crop; no column is cut off.
