  1. 1 Sec. 8(a)(3) of the Act requires that to revoke a union-shop agreement a majority of the employees eligible to vote must vote in favor of deauthorization.

32 of 32 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 152. Grid is 15 columns: stub + "Number of polls" (5 cols: Total; Resulting in deauthorization Number/Percent of total; Resulting in continued authorization Number/Percent of total) + "Employees involved (number eligible to vote)1" (5 cols: Total eligible; In polls > Resulting in deauthorization Number/Percent of total; In polls > Resulting in continued authorization Number/Percent of total) + "Valid votes cast" (4 cols: Total; Percent of total eligible; Cast for deauthorization Number/Percent of total eligible). Four heading levels are needed because under "Employees involved" the "In polls" band sits between the top band and the "Resulting in ..." pair, whereas under "Number of polls" the "Resulting in ..." headings sit directly under the top band and so are repeated across levels 2 and 3; the tall single headings (stub, "Total", "Total eligible", "Percent of total eligible", "Cast for deauthorization") are repeated down every level they span. Decimal points: in several percentage cells the printed decimal point is lost to scan degradation and the digits read as separated by a space ("42 2", "59 0", "12 8", "70 7", "76 4", "32 7"). I transcribed these as 42.2 (Total, Number of polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Percent of total), 59.0 (AFL-CIO unions, Number of polls / Resulting in continued authorization / Percent of total), 12.8 (AFL-CIO unions, Employees involved / In polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Percent of total), 70.7 (Total, Valid votes cast / Percent of total eligible), 76.4 (AFL-CIO unions, Valid votes cast / Percent of total eligible) and 32.7 (Other local unions, Valid votes cast / Cast for deauthorization / Percent of total eligible). Each is consistent with the other entries in its column and with the underlying counts, so the missing points are scan artifacts rather than printed omissions. No arithmetic problems found: in every row the two "Resulting in ..." poll counts sum to the Total, the two "In polls" employee counts sum to Total eligible, and the three affiliation rows sum to the Total row in each count column. "AFL-CIO" is set with an en dash in the original; transcribed with a plain hyphen. A stray ink mark sits in the top right margin above the table rule and is not part of the table.
