  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce

765 of 765 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 133. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the table continues past the Virginia row (the remaining South Atlantic states, the South Atlantic division subtotal, and all later divisions/U.S. total are not on this image). No footnote texts appear on the crop, although markers are printed (a raised 1 on the caption and a raised 2 on the stub heading "Division and State"), so footnotes is empty. Column structure: 17 columns. Printed as two heading levels in the output, but the last three spanner headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") actually have their code labels (UD, AC, UC) printed on a lower sub-line within the heading block; UD sits slightly higher than AC and UC. "Division and State^2" and "All cases" are tall single headings repeated in both levels. Division subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are printed centre-indented without leader dots; their labels are transcribed as printed. Minor print artifacts, none affecting values: a stray ink dot sits just left of "75" in the Illinois RD cell, and a stray tick mark sits above the "RD" column heading. The Virginia row touches the bottom edge of the crop but all its digits are legible. Arithmetic check (not used to alter any cell): every state row and every division subtotal reconciles exactly — CA..CP sum to All C cases, RC+RM+RD sum to All R cases, and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC sum to All cases. No suspected misprints.

p. 134. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", 8 unfair-labor-practice columns, 4 representation columns, and single UD, AC and UC columns. The three right-hand spanner headings are hyphenated across lines in the original ("Union de-authoriza-tion cases", "Amend-ment of certifi-cation cases", "Unit clarifica-tion cases") and have been rejoined. This is a "—Continued" page: the table begins on an earlier page (the South Atlantic division subtotal covers states listed there as well as the five printed here), and it continues past the Mountain subtotal onto a following page. No footnote text is printed under the table on this crop, although markers are present: superscript 1 in the caption (excluded as part of the caption) and superscript 2 on the stub heading "Division and State". The "All R cases" cell for Louisiana has a small stray dash/ink mark printed immediately to the left of the figure; the value is read as 51 and the mark is treated as scanning debris, not a minus sign or footnote marker. Every row was checked arithmetically and is internally consistent: for each state the CA…CP columns sum to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sum to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC sum to "All cases"; each division subtotal (East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) equals the sum of the member states printed above it. No misprints were detected.

p. 135. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", 8 unfair-labor-practice columns, 4 representation columns, and the UD, AC and UC columns. The three rightmost headings each occupy one column, with the code (UD / AC / UC) printed under the spelled-out heading in the same box; I treated the code as the second heading level. This crop is the continuation page of Table 6A, so it begins mid-table with the Pacific division states and carries no preceding divisions; the heading band is printed on this page and is transcribed. Only doubtful cell: California, column RC, read as "560" — the final zero is struck through by a printing flaw and could be misread as a 9 or 8. The row and column arithmetic confirms 560 (560+45+133 = 738, and the RC column sums to 818 for Pacific). All row and column totals shown (Pacific, Outlying areas, Total all States and areas) check out arithmetically against the printed components; no misprints detected. Footnote 2 is printed without a closing period after "Commerce"; transcribed as printed. Row labels are followed by long runs of leader dots (and, on the Washington and Virgin Islands lines, stray broken dots and a trailing period); these were dropped per instruction.
