797 of 797 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 178. The crop ends after "Mining and quarrying of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels)"; the table continues on the next page (the mining block has no subtotal here, and no text for the superscript 1 marker on the stub heading "Industrial group" appears within the crop), so `footnotes` is empty. Two scanning artifacts, both resolved by internal arithmetic: (1) in "Food and kindred products", the Valid votes cast for unions / Other local unions cell prints as ".423" with a stray leading dot (leader-dot speck); transcribed as 423, which is confirmed because 4,335+933+287+423 = 5,978, the printed Total. (2) in "Primary metal industries", a stray "0"-like glyph sits on the column rule just left of the Other local unions value 76; it is not a digit of either neighbouring cell, since 3,171+312+15+76 = 3,574, the printed Total. A small stray dash also appears in the AFL-CIO unions column between the "Automotive and other transportation equipment" and "Measuring, analyzing..." rows; it is not a value and no cell was created for it. Blank stub lines in the original (the wrapped second/third lines of long industry names, whose figures are printed on the last line) were joined into single rows as instructed. Every row is internally consistent: won + no-representative = total elections; the four union sub-columns sum to each Total; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast; and the 21 manufacturing industry lines sum exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" subtotal in each column. No misprints detected.

p. 179. This is a continuation page: the table starts on an earlier page and continues past this crop. No footnote text is printed within the crop, so `footnotes` is empty even though the stub heading carries marker 1 ("Industrial group^1"); the note itself must appear elsewhere in the source. The final row, "Museums, art galleries, botanical and zoological gardens", sits on the very bottom edge of the crop — the digits are legible but the baseline is clipped, so its figures (5, 3, 2, 0, 1, 0, 2, 163, 142, 101, 90, 0, 11, 0, 41, 136) are slightly less certain than the rest. In the row "Local and suburban transit and interurban highway passenger transportation" there is a small stray ink mark resembling a "0" printed just above and left of the value 209 in the "Other local unions" (valid votes) column. I read it as a printing artifact, not a digit or footnote marker: 209 is what makes the column foot to the printed subtotal 1,240 for "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" (209+170+14+21+43+783 = 1,240). "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" is a subtotal row covering the six preceding transportation/utility lines; it is printed with the same column values as data rows and is transcribed as such. All internal arithmetic checks pass as printed: in every row the union "Total" equals the sum of AFL-CIO + Teamsters + Other national + Other local (both for elections won and for valid votes), total elections equals elections won plus elections with no representative, total valid votes equals votes for unions plus votes for no union, and the transportation subtotal equals the sum of its six component rows in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected; nothing was computed or corrected.

p. 180. The crop is the tail of a continued table (caption reads "—Continued"), so the industrial-group rows preceding "Legal services" are on the previous page; the column headings are reprinted here and are transcribed in full. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall single columns, five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". "Services" and "Public administration" are set in the indented sub-total style and are separated from the detail lines by rules; "Services" is the group total for the services detail lines (most of which fall on the earlier page). The footnote line at the foot of the crop is clipped horizontally through the lower half of its letters by the bottom edge of the image; it is still legible and reads as transcribed, but the terminal year "1972" and the final period are the least certain characters. A small stray ink mark sits above the "Total valid votes cast" / "Valid votes cast for unions" heading boundary; it is a printing artifact, not a footnote marker. All six rows cross-check internally (union detail columns sum to their "Total", total valid votes equal union votes plus no-union votes, and total elections equal union wins plus no-representative elections), so no misprints are suspected.
