  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

649 of 649 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 175. The crop ends mid-table: the North Dakota line is the last fully printed row and its baseline sits at the very bottom edge of the image, but all 16 of its values are legible. The table continues (remaining West North Central states, their subtotal, and the later divisions) on the part of the page not shown, so there is no grand-total row here and no footnote text is visible — the superior "1" on the stub heading "Division and State" is printed, but the note it points to is below the crop, hence the empty footnotes list. Column structure: 17 columns. Two spanner groups each cover five columns with identical sub-headings (Total / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions) — the first under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" (columns 3-7) and the second under "Valid votes cast for unions" (columns 11-15). The six tall single headings (stub, "Total elections", "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast", "Total votes for no union", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation") are repeated in both header levels. "AFL-CIO" is printed broken as "AFL-" / "CIO" across two lines and is joined here. The division subtotal lines (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central) are printed indented, set off by horizontal rules, and carry no division number; their labels are transcribed without the indentation. Arithmetic checks all pass as printed: every state's union-vote components sum to its union total, union votes plus no-union votes equal total valid votes cast, elections won plus elections with no representative equal total elections, and each of the three division subtotals equals the sum of its member states in all 16 numeric columns. No suspected misprints. Doubtful cell: Vermont, "AFL-CIO unions" column under elections won — a small stray comma-shaped speck sits just left of the printed 0. It is scanner dirt, not a digit or footnote marker, and the cell is transcribed as 0 (confirmed by the New England subtotal of 5, which equals Massachusetts' 5 alone).

p. 176. This is a continuation page: the table begins on an earlier page, and the crop ends mid-section. The last row shown is New Mexico; the Mountain division's remaining states (Arizona, Utah, Nevada) and its subtotal line, along with the Pacific division and the national total, fall below the bottom edge of the crop. For the same reason the West North Central block here shows only its last three states (South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas) before its subtotal. The stub heading carries a raised "1" (transcribed as "Division and State^1"), but the text of footnote 1 is not printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Scan-quality remarks (transcription reflects the intended text): in the column spanner the word "rights" is printed with a broken "ri" ligature that reads like "nghts"; several headings print "unions"/"in" with a dotless i ("umons", "m"); the row labels "Virginia", "District of Columbia", "Mississippi", "Louisiana" show the same dotless-i artifact. In the Tennessee row a stray ink speck sits between the "Total" (3) and "AFL-CIO unions" (2) columns of the elections-won block; it is not a digit or a footnote marker. Subtotal rows are internally consistent with the states listed above them in every column for South Atlantic, East South Central and West South Central, and the union-vote component columns sum to their "Total" in every data row, so no misprints are suspected in the transcribed portion. Blank typographic gaps separate the division blocks; they carry no labels or values and are not transcribed as rows.

p. 177. The crop continues a table from the preceding page: the body begins mid-way through the Mountain division (Arizona, Utah, Nevada are the last States before the "Mountain" subtotal of 30 elections, whose earlier States are not on this image). Column headings are printed on this crop, so they are given. Scan artifacts, none of which affect the values read: a stray ink dot sits just left of the "45" in the Utah row (Valid votes cast for unions / Total column) and just left of the "0" in the Guam row (elections won / Other national unions column); these are speckles, not digits or markers. Several row labels show the 1-bit scan's dropped i-dots ("Arızona", "Califomia", "Hawau", "Vırgın Islands"); they are transcribed with standard spelling. The AFL-CIO headings are set with a long hyphen and are transcribed as "AFL-CIO". The footnote line is clipped by the bottom edge of the crop (the descenders are cut) but is fully legible. All internal checks pass as printed: union votes plus no-union votes equal total valid votes cast in every row, and the Pacific and Outlying Areas subtotals equal the sums of their listed States in all sixteen value columns.
