  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

883 of 883 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 172. 17 columns. The crop shows the first page of a multi-page table: it begins with the New England division and ends after the "West North Central" subtotal rule, so later divisions (South, West, etc.) and the grand total continue on following pages. No footnote text is printed within this crop, although the stub heading carries a raised "1" marker ("Division and State^1"); the note it refers to must appear on a later page of the table. The table caption is cut off at the very top of the crop and is omitted as instructed. On the "New England" subtotal row a small apostrophe-like speck follows the label just before the leader dots; it does not match the raised-numeral style of the stub-heading marker and reads as a scan artifact, so it was not transcribed as a footnote marker. All division subtotals were checked against the sums of their member states for every one of the 16 numeric columns and each one adds up exactly as printed; no misprints detected.

p. 173. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast", five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", "Total votes for no union", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop (the page is a "—Continued" continuation; the footnote presumably appears on the first or last page of the table). No footnote text appears below the body here. The crop is a continuation page: it begins mid-table with the South Atlantic states and ends with the Mountain division subtotal, which is the last printed row on this page (the table continues on the following page). The four unindented-label-group rows South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central and Mountain are division subtotal rows, printed indented and set off by rules. Colorado, "Number of employees eligible to vote": printed as "3,184" with a stray dot/speck immediately after the final digit (scan artifact); transcribed as 3,184, which is consistent with the Mountain subtotal 11,904. Legibility is otherwise good. All row-wise and column-wise arithmetic checks (component columns summing to their "Total" column, union + no-union votes equalling total valid votes, and state values summing to each division subtotal) are internally consistent for every division on this page, which supports the column placement of the digits.

p. 174. This crop continues Table 15B from the preceding page, so it begins mid-table with the Pacific division states; the column headings are reprinted on this page and are transcribed above. The table has 17 printed columns. In the "Outlying Areas" row, the cell under "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions" is printed as "- 0" (a short stray dash or broken rule to the left of the digit); it is transcribed as "0", which is consistent with the component rows (Puerto Rico 0 + Virgin Islands 0). A faint stray mark appears in the heading area above "Total" of the won-by-unions block and below "Other national unions" of the valid-votes block; these are print artifacts, not footnote markers. All printed subtotal and total rows that can be checked against the rows shown (Pacific from its six states; Outlying Areas from Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands) add up exactly as printed; no misprints detected. The "Total, all States and area" row cannot be verified from this crop alone because the earlier divisions are on previous pages.
