891 of 891 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.
p. 169. The crop shows only the first page of Table 15A: it ends after the "West North Central" subtotal line, so the remaining census divisions, any U.S. total row, and the text of footnote 1 (the marker appears on the stub heading "Division and State^1") are not on this image. footnotes is therefore empty. Typesetting/alignment: throughout this table the numeric lines are printed slightly higher than the leader-dot label lines they belong to, and for the four division subtotal rows the figures sit on a line clearly above the indented division label. The row-to-figure pairing given here was confirmed arithmetically for every row: total elections = elections won + elections with no representative chosen; the "won by unions" Total equals the sum of its four subcolumns; total valid votes cast = valid votes for unions Total + total votes for no union; the union Total equals the sum of its four subcolumns; and each division subtotal equals the sum of its member states in every column (e.g. New England total elections 9+8+1+87+13+32 = 150; West North Central 50+113+111+8+9+10+41 = 342). No printed figure conflicts with these checks, so no suspected misprints. "North Dakota", Total elections won by unions column: a small ink speck or stray leader dot sits immediately left of the figure 5; the value is transcribed as 5, which is consistent with 3+2 in the subcolumns and with 5+3 = 8 total elections. Scan artifacts in the headings (e.g. "nghts" for "rights", "umons" for "unions", "AFL-CIO" shown with an en-dash) are broken serifs in the 300-ppi bitonal scan, not alternate wording; headings are transcribed with the intended spelling. Hyphenated line breaks in the headings were repaired ("AFL-CIO" retains its true hyphen; "Team-sters", "na-tional", "employ-ees", "rep-resenta-tion" joined).
p. 170. 17 columns. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the note presumably appears on the table's first page or at its end. This is a "—Continued" page: it begins mid-table with the South Atlantic division (no "United States" grand total or earlier divisions) and ends with the Mountain division subtotal, with the Pacific division and any grand total falling outside the crop below. The four indented division subtotal rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central, Mountain), set off by rules, are transcribed as ordinary rows with their values. Verification: every division subtotal was checked against the sum of its member states in all 16 numeric columns, and every state row was checked internally (won + no-representative = total elections; the four union sub-columns = union total; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast). All agree, so no misprints are apparent and no cell is doubtful. Two values are unusual but are printed as shown and are consistent with their subtotals: Utah's "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" is 7 (vs. 171 union votes), and District of Columbia's "Other local unions" valid votes is 991. Scan artifacts: the page is a 1-bit scan in which many "i" dots are faint (e.g. "Virginia", "Mississippi", "rights", "in which" in headings); this affects legibility of letters only, not of any digit.
p. 171. This crop is the final portion of a table continued from earlier pages: it begins mid-table with the Pacific division States, so earlier divisions/States are not on this image. The caption line is sliced off at the top edge (only the bottom few pixels of its descenders are visible). The single footnote at the bottom is clipped along its baseline but is legible; if the source table carries further footnotes below it, they fall outside the crop. The \"Pacific\", \"Outlying Areas\" and \"Total, all States and areas\" rows are printed indented as subtotal/total lines, set off by rules. In the stub the headings print \"AFL-CIO\" with a short dash between AFL and CIO; transcribed as a plain hyphen. A small stray ink tick sits in the stub just above the \"Total, all States and areas\" label and is not part of any text. All rows are internally consistent on check: in each row the union-win subcategories sum to the \"Total\" won column, that total plus the no-representative column equals total elections, the valid-votes-for-unions subcategories sum to their total, and union votes plus no-union votes equal total valid votes cast; the Pacific and Outlying Areas subtotals also sum correctly from their member rows in every column.
