  1. 1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case." See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 A proceeding in which the Board had entered an order dismissing the complaint and the charging party appealed such dismissal in the courts of appeals.
  3. 3 The Board appeared as "amicus curiae" in one case.

47 of 56 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 223. 12 columns: stub, 5 "Number of proceedings" columns, 4 "Percentages" columns, and 2 cumulative columns. The stub column carries no printed heading, so its header cells are empty. Dash rules ("——") fill many cells in the percentage and cumulative columns (the whole of "Vs both employers and unions" percentages, the cumulative columns for the contempt block, etc.); per convention these are transcribed as empty cells, as are the blank cells. In particular the first row ("Proceedings decided by U.S. courts of appeals") shows only dash rules in all four percentage columns and in the two cumulative columns. The scan frequently drops the decimal point, so values print as "100 0", "5 6", "8 1", "0 0", "6 4", "0 4"; these are transcribed as 100.0, 5.6, 8.1, 0.0, 6.4, 0.4. Likewise the abbreviation periods in the stub label "U S Supreme Court" and in some column headings ("Vs"/"Vs.") are only intermittently legible; the first "Number of proceedings" subhead reads "Vs employers only" and the "Percentages" subhead reads "Vs. employers only" as printed, and the percentage subhead "Vs both employers and unions" likewise shows no period. The printed percentages are rounded so each column sums to 100.0 and therefore differ slightly from the exact ratios of the printed counts (e.g. 121/161 = 75.2 is printed 75.1; 14/16 = 87.5 is printed 87.4; 13/23 = 56.5 is printed 57.0; 6/23 = 26.1 is printed 26.0; 1/23 = 4.3 is printed 4.0; 2/7 = 28.6 is printed 29.0; 5/7 = 71.4 is printed 71.0). All are transcribed as printed. All count columns cross-foot exactly (178 + 30 = 208; the five appeals detail rows sum to 178/161/16/1; the five contempt rows sum to 30/23/7; cumulative 6,676 + 1,403 + 500 + 201 + 1,397 = 10,177; the eight Supreme Court rows sum to 250). Two row labels repeat between the courts-of-appeals block and the Supreme Court block ("Board orders affirmed in full", "Board orders affirmed with modification", "Board orders set aside", "Remanded to Board"); indentation level, which marks the hierarchy, is not preserved in the grid.
