788 of 788 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 216. The table has 17 printed columns (stub plus 16 numeric), with two spanner headings: "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" over columns 3-7 and "Valid votes cast for unions" over columns 11-15, each broken into Total / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions. Crop is incomplete at the bottom: the mining section ends mid-list after "Mining and quarrying of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels)" with no sector subtotal, and the table continues on the following page. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Industrial group^1"), but no footnote text is printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. All 16 numeric columns were cross-checked against the "Manufacturing" subtotal row and every column sums exactly (e.g. total elections 1,200; employees eligible 98,081; total valid votes cast 88,918; votes for no union 48,733; eligible employees in units choosing representation 31,406). Row-wise the union-breakdown components also add to each row's "Total", and Total elections = won + no representative chosen, in every row including the four mining rows. No misprints detected. Two stray scanning marks, neither transcribed as content: a short dash-like mark immediately left of "170" in the "Number of employees eligible to vote" column on the "Ship and boat building and repairing" row (the column sums confirm the value is 170), and a small apostrophe-like speck left of "354" in the "Total valid votes cast" column on the "Metal mining" row (confirmed as 354 by 125 + 229). There are also faint ink specks in the whitespace of the heading band and beside the "Automotive and other transportation equipment" row; they are not digits. The scan renders the AFL-CIO heading with a short dash between "AFL" and "CIO" ("AFL-CIO"); it is transcribed with a plain hyphen. Leader dots after row labels were dropped, and multi-line row labels (e.g. "Apparel and other finished products made from fabric and similar materials", "Measuring, analyzing, and controlling instruments; photographic, medical, and optical goods; watches and clocks") were joined with end-of-line hyphenation repaired ("trans-portation" to "transportation", "pho-tographic" to "photographic").

p. 217. This is a "—Continued" page of Table 16; 17 printed columns. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Industrial group^1"), but no footnote text is printed within this crop (it appears on the table's first page), so `footnotes` is empty. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the last transcribed row, "Museums, art galleries, botanical and zoological gardens", sits on the bottom edge — its label and all 16 values are legible, but the table clearly continues below (the service-industries block has no subtotal row on this image). "Mining" is set off by a double rule above and below, i.e. it is the tail of a section begun on the previous page. "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" is a subtotal row covering the six preceding transportation/communication/utility lines. Arithmetic checks all pass as printed: for every row the four union-breakdown columns sum to their "Total", "Total elections" = won + no-representative, and union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast; the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" subtotal equals the sum of its six component rows in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected. Minor scan artifacts that do not affect the reading: stray ink specks appear left of "1,161" (Educational services, Total valid votes cast), left of "3" (Motion pictures, AFL-CIO unions, won column), left of "68" (Hotels, Total elections), left of "14" (Business services, Other national unions, won column) and left of "2,711" (Business services, AFL-CIO unions, votes); these are speckle, not digits or footnote markers.

p. 218. Crop is the final page of a continued table (caption reads "—Continued"); the body therefore starts mid-list with the last three detail lines of the Services division, followed by the "Services" division total, "Public administration", and the grand total. 17 columns, 2 heading levels. Nine of the headings are tall single headings spanning both levels (stub, "Total elections", "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast", "Total votes for no union", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation"); the two spanner headings over five columns each are "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" (cols 3-7) and "Valid votes cast for unions" (cols 11-15). The last column heading is printed "Eligible em-ployees in units choos-ing rep-resenta-tion" — i.e. "choosing representation", not "choosing no representation". It is read that way here, and the data agree: Legal services won 8 of 8 elections and shows 441 of 441 eligible employees in that column. The footnote line is clipped by the bottom edge of the crop — only the upper sliver of the glyphs is inside the image — so its text is a low-confidence reading; the marker "1" and the opening "Source: Standard Industrial Classification" are the most legible part, and the trailing agency names and year are inferred from letter tops and should be verified against the page. No internal arithmetic inconsistencies: in every row the four union columns sum to their "Total", won + no-representative = total elections, and union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast.
