Reader’s notes

p. 200. Grid is stub + 14 numeric columns, with four printed heading levels; "Total" (polls), "Total eligible", "Total" (valid votes) and "Percent of total eligible" (valid votes) are tall single headings repeated down the levels, and the polls panel's "Number"/"Percent of total" and the "Cast for deauthorization" subheads occupy the two lowest levels. The stub heading reads "Affiliation of union holding union-shop contract"; "Total el-igible" is a hyphen break joined to "Total eligible". Two decimal points are faint or dropped in the scan and were restored: Teamsters, Valid votes cast / Cast for deauthorization / Percent of total eligible, printed as "60 1", transcribed 60.1; and Other local unions, Employees involved / In polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Percent of total, printed as "4 1", transcribed 4.1. Both are confirmed by the arithmetic (113/188 = 60.1; 12/293 = 4.1). Minor scan artifacts that are not part of the values: a stray dot before ".26" in the Total row (Number of polls / Resulting in deauthorization / Number = 26), before "· 71.9" in the AFL-CIO row (Valid votes cast / Percent of total eligible = 71.9), and before "· 2" in the Other local unions row (Number of polls / Total = 2). A stray tick also sits in the blank stub heading area and in the blank "Total" cell of the Valid votes cast panel; neither carries text. The AFL-CIO and Teamsters stub labels are followed by long leader-dot runs with gaps (extra dot groups after the label), dropped as leaders. All column and row sums and all printed percentages check out against the printed components, so no misprint is suspected.
