  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions.
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

779 of 779 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 181. 17 columns: stub, "All cases", eight unfair-labor-practice columns (All C cases, CA, CB, CC, CD, CE, CG, CP), four representation columns (All R cases, RC, RM, RD), then UD, AC and UC. The crop cuts the table off mid-page: the last printed row is Virginia, and the South Atlantic division subtotal and all remaining divisions (plus any footnotes and the source note) fall below the crop. The caption line at the very top is clipped to a sliver and was excluded as instructed; no footnote text is visible on this image, hence the empty footnotes list. Header structure: "All cases" and the stub heading "Division and State^2" are tall single headings spanning both printed levels, so they are repeated in each level. The second-level cells UD, AC and UC sit on slightly different baselines in the print (UD a line higher than AC and UC) but are the same heading level, i.e. the single-column abbreviation under each of the three spanning headings "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases"; those three were de-hyphenated from "Union de-/authoriza-/tion cases", "Amend-/ment of certifi-/cation cases" and "Unit clarifi-/cation cases". Doubtful marks, all treated as print noise rather than characters: the Maine row, CG column, shows "0" followed by a stray low dot ("0.") — read as 0; the Michigan row has a stray comma-like speck between the RM and RD columns, just left of 84 — RD is read as 84. Neither affects the arithmetic. Checks: every row's C-case components sum to its "All C cases" value, every R-case component sums to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC equals "All cases" for all 29 printed rows, including the four division subtotals; the division subtotals also equal the sum of their member states column by column. No printed value appears to be a misprint.

p. 182. This is a continuation page of Table 6A; no footnote text is printed on this crop, although the stub heading carries marker 2 (and the caption, excluded, carries marker 1). The footnote definitions must appear elsewhere in the table. Column structure: 17 columns. The "Unfair labor practice cases" spanner covers "All C cases" through "CP" (8 columns); "Representation cases" covers "All R cases" through "RD" (4 columns); the last three spanners each cover a single column (UD, AC, UC). "All cases" and the stub heading are tall headings spanning both levels. The crop begins mid-division: the "South Atlantic" subtotal row (4,035) is larger than the sum of the five South Atlantic states shown here, because that division's earlier states (Delaware, Maryland, D.C., Virginia) fall on the preceding page. All other subtotal rows (East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) sum exactly to the states printed above them, and every row's component columns sum to its "All C cases", "All R cases" and "All cases" figures, so the numeric grid is internally consistent. Scan artifacts, none affecting the transcribed values: Alabama's UC cell shows a small stray dash to the right of "2"; Florida's UC cell has a stray ink speck to the left of "6"; Tennessee's CC/CD area and Mississippi's stub line carry small specks. The table continues past the "Mountain" subtotal onto the next page (the Pacific division and U.S. total are not on this crop).

p. 183. This is the final portion of a table continued from earlier pages: it begins mid-list with the Pacific division states, so the earlier divisions are not on this crop. The column headings are reprinted in full on this page, so they are transcribed. Scan specks: in the Washington row a small dot precedes the RM value ("·7") and the UD value ("·8"); both are stray marks, not printed characters or footnote markers. The same kind of stray tick appears before California's RM "60" and Alaska's RM "2". I transcribed these as plain 7, 8, 60 and 2, which is confirmed by the arithmetic (Washington RC 124 + RM 7 + RD 53 = All R 184; All C 676 + All R 184 + UD 8 + AC 0 + UC 6 = All cases 874). Every row and column in this crop foots correctly: each state's C subcolumns sum to All C, its R subcolumns sum to All R, the five case-type columns sum to All cases, the six Pacific states sum to the Pacific line, and Puerto Rico plus Virgin Islands sum to Outlying areas. No misprints detected. Faint stray marks also sit in the left margin and above the CP and CC column heads; they are not part of any cell.
