Reader’s notes

p. 206. The table has 12 columns; the stub has no printed heading, so cell 0 of both heading levels is empty. "Total proceedings", "Total dispositions" and "Pending in district court Sept. 30, 1990" are tall single headings spanning both levels and are repeated in each. Footnote cut off: the caption carries a raised 1 and a single footnote is printed below the table rule, but the crop slices through its first line — only the tops of the glyphs survive (it appears to begin "1. The method of calculating 10(j) statistics has been adjusted ..." and to continue for at least one more line). Because it cannot be read reliably, it is not transcribed; `footnotes` is empty. Heading wording: in the second-level heading over column 2 the scan shows "Oct 1, 1989" with no visible period after "Oct" (the parallel heading in the last column does show "Sept. 30, 1990"); the period may simply have dropped out in this 1-bit scan. Transcribed as printed. Row labels: the Sec. 10(l) lines are printed with a lowercase letter l, which in this typeface is nearly identical to a 1/I; read as 10(l) consistent with the caption. In the 8(a)(1)(2)(4)(5) row the "1" in the Total proceedings column is broken/faint but is a 1. Scan artifacts, not data: stray specks sit in otherwise blank space in several places — left of the 0 in Settled on the 8(a)(1) row, left of the 0 in the last column on the 8(a)(1)(3)(4) row, left of the 1 in Inactive on the 10(l) total row, a comma-like mark before the 4 in Filed on 8(b)(4)(A), an apostrophe-like mark before the 10 in Filed on 8(b)(4)(B), and marks in the Total dispositions column beside the 8(b)(4)(D) and 8(b)(7)(C) rows. None were transcribed as characters. Arithmetic checks pass: every column of the 10(j) block sums to its "Under Sec. 10(j) total" line, every column of the 10(l) block sums to its total line, Total proceedings = pending + filed, and Total dispositions = granted + denied + settled + withdrawn + dismissed + inactive in both totals. No printed value appears to be a misprint.
