Reader’s notes

p. 191. The crop cuts the table off after the "West North Central" subtotal; the remaining divisions/states and the totals row continue on the following page, and the text of footnote 1 (marker on the stub heading "Division and State") is not shown in this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall single columns, five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". Several cells carry stray scanner specks that look like leading punctuation; I read them as marks, not characters, and each reading is confirmed by the row or column sum: - "West North Central", "Valid votes cast for unions / Total": printed as "-6,499" with a dash-like speck; transcribed 6,499 (= 1,376+1,497+2,000+181+187+303+955). - "South Dakota", "Valid votes cast for unions / Total": printed as "'187"; transcribed 187 (= 185+2). - "Massachusetts", "Valid votes cast for unions / Other local unions": printed as "·84"; transcribed 84 (878+287+15+84 = 1,264). - "North Dakota", "Number of elections ... won by unions / Total": printed as "· 7"; transcribed 7 (= 3+4). - "Rhode Island" and "West North Central", "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions"; "Nebraska" and "Kansas", "Number of elections ... won by unions / Other national unions"; "Iowa" and "Minnesota", "Teamsters" (won): all have adjacent specks/commas; transcribed as the plain digits shown. "New Hampshire", "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" = 2 looks anomalously small but is confirmed by the New England subtotal (213+2+7+855+118+783 = 1,978). All four division subtotals reconcile with their member states across all 16 numeric columns, and union + no-union votes equal total valid votes cast in every row checked. No printed value appeared to be in error.

p. 192. The crop is cut off at the bottom: the Mountain division ends mid-list (Utah is the last printed row visible; Nevada and the Mountain subtotal, plus the Pacific division and any U.S. total, fall below the crop). No footnote text is printed on this crop, although the stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"); the footnote itself must be on another part of the page/table. Typography notes: in the Mississippi row the "Valid votes cast for unions — Teamsters" cell is printed with a stray mark that reads like a leading comma (",24"); it is transcribed as 24, which is confirmed by the East South Central subtotal (339+344+10+24 = 717). The Alabama "Total" won-by-unions cell is a slightly broken "17". Stray ink dots also appear in the stub/leader area of the Idaho row and to the left of the Wyoming "Eligible employees" value; neither affects a digit. Every row and every division subtotal on this crop was checked arithmetically (union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes; component unions = union total; state rows sum to each division line) and all agree with the printed figures, with no misprints found.

p. 193. This crop is the final portion of Table 15B, continued from the preceding page: Nevada is the last State of the Mountain division, whose earlier States are not on this image, so the Mountain subtotal row (182 ...) covers States mostly printed before this crop. The table has 17 printed columns; the five sub-columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" and the five under "Valid votes cast for unions" are distinct groups with identical sub-headings. Minor scan artifacts, none affecting the reading: a stray speck precedes the 0 in the Alaska row under "Valid votes cast for unions / Other national unions" (read as 0, consistent with the Pacific subtotal of 1,166 = 773+23+347+0+23+0); specks also appear above "AFL-CIO unions" in the Nevada row and in the Pacific row near "Total" valid votes for unions. The row-label leader dots in the stub, which are broken and uneven throughout, were dropped as instructed. All internal cross-sums for the States shown check against the Pacific and Outlying Areas subtotals; no misprints detected.
