  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

731 of 731 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 246. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall single columns, five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then two more tall single columns. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text appears in this crop, so `footnotes` is empty; the note is presumably printed at the end of the table on a later page. The crop ends with the "West North Central" division subtotal and a closing rule; the table continues with further divisions (South Atlantic onward) on the following page(s), which are not part of this image. All sixteen numeric columns of each division subtotal row (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) were checked against the sum of their constituent state rows and every one reconciles exactly, which supports the column assignment. Two cells worth flagging as unusual but checked and transcribed as printed: Nebraska has 1 election won by "Other national unions" and 227 valid union votes all in the "Other national unions" column (0 in AFL-CIO and Teamsters), and Rhode Island has union total votes 7 split as 0 AFL-CIO / 1 Teamsters / 6 Other national — both are consistent with their division subtotals. Row labels are followed by leader dots in the original; these have been dropped. "AFL-CIO" is printed broken across lines as "AFL- CIO" in both heading levels and has been rejoined.

p. 247. The crop is a mid-table page section: 17 columns, two heading levels, no caption and no footnote text within the crop (the marker "1" on the stub heading "Division and State" refers to a footnote printed elsewhere, so `footnotes` is empty). Crop boundaries: the table continues above (the South Atlantic division's rows begin at the top edge with Delaware, which is the first state of that division, so no row appears to be cut at the top) and below. The final division shown (the Mountain division: Montana through Utah) is cut off by the bottom edge after "Utah" — its remaining states (e.g. Nevada) and its subtotal line are not on this image. Row labels: the rows "South Atlantic", "East South Central" and "West South Central" are indented division subtotal lines carrying full values, transcribed as ordinary data rows in their printed position. Doubtful character: the stub label in the row beginning "Lous..." (Arkansas block, second row) is printed with the "i" of "Louisiana" filled in/lost in the scan, reading like "Lousiana"; I transcribed it as "Louisiana", the standard spelling used in this table series. Arithmetic cross-checks: every division subtotal row (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) sums correctly down all 16 numeric columns, and in every state row the union component columns (AFL-CIO + Teamsters + other national + other local) sum to the "Total" union columns and union total + no-union total equals total valid votes cast. No misprints detected. Minor scan artifacts not affecting values: the "i" characters throughout are frequently dotless (e.g. "Mississippi", "unions"), and a stray ink speck sits just left of the Oklahoma "Teamsters" valid-votes cell (24); it is not a digit or footnote marker.

p. 248. This is a continuation page (caption reads "—Continued"), so the body begins mid-table: "Nevada" is the last State of the Mountain division, whose preceding States are on the earlier page; the "Mountain" row is that division's subtotal and therefore does not sum from the rows shown here. The indented rows "Mountain", "Pacific" and "Outlying Areas" are division subtotals. Headings are heavily hyphenated in the original and have been rejoined: "Total elec-tions", "AFL-CIO unions" (printed with an en dash), "Team-sters", "Other na-tional unions", "Num-ber of em-ployees eligible to vote", "Eligible employ-ees m units choos-ing repre-sentation". In that last heading the word printed as "m" is a broken/worn rendering of "in"; transcribed as "in". Guam, "AFL-CIO unions" column (elections won): the printed glyph is "0" followed by a small stray ink mark that resembles a comma; read as 0, consistent with the rest of the all-zero Guam row. A similar stray tick appears in the header area above the Nevada row in the "Other local unions" (elections) column; it is not a value. All internal checks on the printed figures are consistent: component columns add to their "Total" columns, won + none-chosen = total elections, union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast, and the Pacific and Outlying Areas subtotals equal the sum of their listed States.
