  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

917 of 917 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 240. 17 columns. The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but the text of footnote 1 is not printed within this crop (the table continues on following pages), so `footnotes` is empty. Vertical alignment: in this table the numeric block is set roughly half a line HIGHER than the stub labels, so each state's figures appear slightly above the line carrying its name, and each division total's figures appear on the line above the indented division label ("New England", "Middle Atlantic", "East North Central", "West North Central"). I paired figure line i with label line i, and verified the pairing arithmetically: within every state row the four union sub-columns sum to the "Total" won column, won + "no representative chosen" = total elections, the four "valid votes cast for unions" sub-columns sum to that block's Total, and union votes + "no union" votes = total valid votes cast. Every one of the four division totals also reconciles down all 16 numeric columns. No discrepancies found anywhere in the grid. The Maine row is an outlier worth flagging to a reader (8 elections but 6,983 eligible voters, 6,803 eligible employees in units choosing representation), but it is printed that way and is internally consistent (5,646 + 1 = 5,647 union votes; 5,647 + 228 = 5,875 total valid votes), and it is required for the New England totals to sum. So it is transcribed as printed, not corrected. Scan artifacts in the stub, read against the known state sequence and transcribed with standard spellings: "Mame" = Maine, "Induana"/"Indiana ." = Indiana, "Ilhnois" = Illinois, "Missoun" = Missouri, "Division" prints as "Divsion"/"Dnsion". Leader dots dropped from all labels. The crop ends immediately after the "West North Central" division total; the remaining divisions (South Atlantic onward) and the US total are on subsequent pages and are not in this image.

p. 241. The crop is a continuation page: 17 columns, two heading levels, no caption and no footnote block. The stub heading carries a reference marker ("Division and State^1"), but the footnote text for marker 1 is not printed on this image. The table is cut off at the bottom of the crop: the Mountain division's state list ends at Utah (Nevada and the division subtotal, plus any following divisions, fall below the crop). The rows shown are the tail of the South Atlantic block (its division subtotal is present), the complete East South Central and West South Central blocks, and an incomplete Mountain block. The three division subtotal rows ("South Atlantic", "East South Central", "West South Central") are indented under their state lists; their labels are transcribed as printed. In the East South Central subtotal row, a small stray ink speck (resembling an apostrophe) sits just left of the figure in the "Number of elections ... won by unions / Total" column; the value is 95, which equals the sum of the four state rows above it (20+29+31+15), so the mark is treated as a printing artifact and not a footnote marker. Every column of all three division subtotals was checked against the sum of its member state rows and agrees exactly; within each state row the four union-vote detail columns also sum to the "Valid votes cast for unions / Total" column, and that total plus "Total votes for no union" equals "Total valid votes cast". No misprints were found and nothing was computed or corrected.

p. 242. This crop is the final page of a table continued from earlier pages: the column headings are reprinted here, but the body begins mid-division with Nevada (the other Mountain-division States are on the preceding page), so the "Mountain" line is a division subtotal whose components are only partly shown on this image. The single footnote is clipped by the bottom edge of the crop — only the upper half of its letterforms is visible. The wording given is my reading of those partial glyphs and matches the standard note used in this series; the terminal period is inferred. Two stray ink specks sit in the stub margin and should not be read as characters or markers: a dot just left of "4,799" in the Mountain row (last column, "Eligible employees in units choosing representation") and a dot just left of "56" in the Puerto Rico row (first numeric column, "Total elections"). Neither is a footnote marker; both values are transcribed without them. All internal arithmetic cross-checks pass, which independently confirms the column assignments: in every row the four union-breakdown columns sum to their "Total", "Total valid votes cast" equals union total plus "Total votes for no union", total elections equals union-won plus no-representative elections, and the Pacific, Outlying Areas and grand-total lines sum correctly from their component rows. No printed value appears to be a misprint.
