Results of Rerun Elections Held in Representation Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1989

p. 232. COLUMN-HEADING MISALIGNMENT (printing error in the source): the whole heading block is set one column to the LEFT of the body columns it describes. The vertical rules are identical in the heading and the body, and the heading cell centres fall at the same x-positions as body columns 2-8, while body column 9 (48.6, 53.7, 0.0, 41.7, 0.0, 52.2, —, 46.7, 50.0) carries no printed heading at all. Concretely, as printed, "Total rerun elections^2 / Number" sits over the stub (row-label) column, "Percent by type" sits over the column holding 70/54/4/12/..., "Union certified / Number" sits over the column holding 100.0, and so on. I have transcribed the headings in the columns where they are actually printed, as instructed. The intended alignment is plainly one column to the right: stub (unheaded) | Total rerun elections^2 {Number=70, Percent by type=100.0} | Union certified {Number=21, Percent by type=30.0} | No union chosen {Number=49, Percent by type=70.0} | Outcome of original election reversed {Number=34, Percent by type=48.6}. That reading is confirmed arithmetically throughout (e.g. 21+49=70; 30.0+70.0=100.0; 34/70=48.6%; column sums 54+4+12=70 and 2+46+0+16+6=70). "RC cases", column 7 (the heading-row "Number" of "Outcome of original election reversed"; semantically the "No union chosen / Percent by type" value): printed as "66 7" because the decimal point is broken/faint in the scan. Transcribed as 66.7, which is what 36/54 gives and what the rest of the column's formatting requires. "Regional Director-directed elections", last column (48.6-column): printed 46.7, but 7 of 16 is 43.8. Suspected misprint; transcribed as printed. Every other percentage in that column checks out against its own row. "Expedited elections": the four percentage cells hold an em-dash rule (———) and are recorded as "". Right edge of the frame: beyond the last data column there are two very narrow vertical strips (roughly 0.08 in and 0.17 in wide) running the full height of the table. They are too narrow to hold type and contain nothing; I have treated them as a multi-rule right border rather than as columns, giving 9 columns in all. They are most likely leftover rules from the same typesetting shift that displaced the headings. Row labels "Regional Director-directed elections" and "Board-directed elections" each wrap over two printed lines and are joined here; the hyphen in "Director-directed" is a real compound hyphen, not an end-of-line break.
