  1. 1 "Proceedings" are comparable to "cases" reported in annual reports prior to fiscal 1964. This term more accurately describes the data inasmuch as a single "proceeding" often includes more than one "case." See Glossary of terms for definitions.

53 of 62 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 256. Twelve columns: stub plus five "Number of proceedings" columns, four "Percentages" columns, and two cumulative (July 5, 1935-Sept. 30, 1988) columns. Em-dash cells (meaning not applicable) are transcribed as "" throughout, which affects the two top rows, the "On petitions for contempt" block (last four columns) and most percentage cells in the Supreme Court block. The scan has dropped or faded many periods. Decimal points are missing or nearly invisible in several percentage cells, which print as e.g. "75 5", "73 6", "5 3", "4 9", "0 7", "100 0", "16 7", "14 3", "0 0", "17 4", "0 4"; I have restored the decimal point in each, since every one is a percentage that matches its arithmetic (e.g. 108/143 = 75.5, 11/21 = 52.4). Likewise the label of row 14 prints as "U.S Supreme Court" with the second period lost; I transcribe it "U.S. Supreme Court^3" to match the "U.S. courts of appeals" label in row 1. Doubtful cell: "Board orders affirmed in full" (first row of the appeals block), column "Percentages / Vs. unions only" reads "73 6" to me, i.e. 73.6, but 14/19 = 73.7; 73.6 is what makes that column sum to exactly 100.0, so the printed value is probably 73.6, though the final digit is not crisp. All other figures cross-check: appeals totals 166 + 27 = 193 by column, the five review/enforcement rows sum to the 166 line in every count column, the cumulative Number column sums to 9,658, and each percentage column sums to 100.0. The crop cuts the bottom of the footnote area: the last line of footnote 1 is clipped but legible, and footnotes 2 and 3 (markers appear on "Board dismissal" and on "Proceedings decided by U.S. Supreme Court") are not visible on this image at all. The stub column carries no printed heading.
