Final Outcome of Representation Elections in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1988

p. 232. Grid is 16 columns: stub, "Total elections^2", six columns under "Elections won by unions", "Elections in which no representative chosen", six columns under "Employees eligible to vote" (of which the last four sit under the second-level spanner "In units won by"), and "In elections where no representative chosen". Scan artifacts, all read as faded periods rather than true omissions: in the "Percent won" column several decimal points failed to print ("51 4", "44 8", "55 2", "46 3", and the four "100 0" cells); they are transcribed as 51.4, 44.8, 55.2, 46.3 and 100.0. Each is confirmed by arithmetic (e.g. 57/111 = 51.4, 1,786/3,988 = 44.8, 16/29 = 55.2, 1,921/4,153 = 46.3). Likewise the period after "v" is faint or missing in the printed labels "AFL-CIO v Teamsters", "Teamsters v Teamsters", "AFL-CIO v AFL-CIO v. Teamsters" and "AFL-CIO v Teamsters v. Local"; all are transcribed with "v." for consistency with the clearly printed labels. "3 (or more)-union elections." is printed with a trailing period before its leader dots; the period is dropped here. In the "3 (or more)-union elections" row, the Teamsters cell under "In units won by" is printed as "0" followed by a speck that resembles a period ("0."); it is transcribed as 0, which is consistent with the column (499 Teamsters wins total = 479 + 20 + 0) and with the employee total 16,968 = 16,119 + 849 + 0. Em-dash rules (no entry) are rendered as empty cells throughout; printed zeros are kept as 0. Every subtotal and the grand total were checked against their components and all agree, in both the election counts and the employee counts, so no misprints are suspected. The crop covers only panel "A. All representation elections"; the section letter implies at least one further section (normally "B. Elections in units of 500 or more employees" or similar) that continues on a following page and is not shown here. No footnote texts appear beneath the table on this crop, although footnote markers are present (superscript 1 on the caption, superscript 2 on "Total elections"); the footnote block presumably sits below the continuation of the table.

p. 233. 16 columns. The crop is the panel "B. Elections in RC cases" of a table carried over from an earlier page; the panel heading is transcribed as a label-only row. Dash rules (both the long "——" and the shorter "—" used in the "Local v. Local" and "AFL-CIO v. Local" rows) are rendered as empty cells; printed zeros are kept as 0, so the distinction between dash and 0 in the three-union block is preserved as printed. The heading "Total elections" carries a raised 2; the corresponding footnote text is not printed on this crop (it belongs to the earlier page of the table), so `footnotes` is empty. Doubtful cell: the stub label of the third three-union row reads, as best I can make out, "AFL-CIO v. National v. Labor". By the pattern of the neighbouring rows the last word would be expected to be "Local"; the glyphs look like "Labor", so it is transcribed that way, but this label should be re-checked. Arithmetic check (not used to alter any cell): every subtotal row (1-union, 2-union, 3 (or more)-union) and the "Total RC elections" row sums correctly from its component rows in all 15 value columns, and each row's "Total won" plus "Elections in which no representative chosen" equals its "Total elections". No misprints detected. A small stray ink tick sits above the "Percent won" heading box; it is not a footnote marker.

p. 234. The page is a 90-degree-rotated (landscape) scan; it was read in rotated orientation. Grid is stub + 15 numeric columns = 16 cells per row. No column headings are printed on this crop (it continues a table whose headings are on an earlier page), so header_rows is empty. The identity of the 15 numeric columns is nevertheless fixed by the arithmetic, which closes exactly everywhere: (1) total elections; (2) percent of elections won by unions (= col 3 / col 1, e.g. 12/76 = 15.8, 36/132 = 27.3); (3) elections won by unions, total; (4)-(7) won by AFL-CIO / Teamsters / other national unions / other local unions, which sum to col 3; (8) elections won by no union (col 3 + col 8 = col 1); (9) valid votes cast, total; (10) votes for unions, total; (11)-(14) votes for AFL-CIO / Teamsters / other national / other local, summing to col 10; (15) votes against unions (col 10 + col 15 = col 9). The three subtotal rows and the grand total also add correctly down every column. The 1-union and 2-union blocks show the expected diagonal pattern (e.g. the AFL-CIO row carries 12 in both col 3 and col 4, and 354 in both col 10 and col 11). Cells printed as an em-dash rule (meaning the affiliation did not take part) are transcribed as "". Doubtful cells: (a) "2-union elections", 13th numeric column (votes for other national unions) - the glyph could be a dash or a 0; transcribed as 0 to agree with the 0 printed in the National v. Local row above it, and either reading leaves the column total of 19 unchanged. (b) The rows "AFL-CIO v. AFL-CIO v. Teamsters" and "3 (or more) union elections" print 0 rather than a dash in the other-national and other-local columns (cols 6, 7, 13, 14) even though no such union took part; transcribed as printed. (c) In the "AFL-CIO v. Teamsters" row the 1 in the won-by-AFL-CIO column (col 4) and the 0 in the won-by-Teamsters column (col 5) are faint; the assignment is forced by the column totals (col 4 = 2, col 5 = 1) together with Teamsters v. Teamsters contributing the single Teamsters win. "C. Elections in RM cases" is printed as a bold section line spanning the table rather than as a data row; its exact vertical placement was hard to fix in the rotated scan, but since every row on this crop is an RM row it is given as the first body row, with empty value cells. The table caption, running head and printed page number were omitted.

This crop is the tail end of Table 13 (caption marked "—Continued"), so the body holds only the last two printed rows; the earlier rows of the RD-election section appear on the preceding page. The column headings are printed in full on this page, so they are transcribed here.
