692 of 693 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 3 cells break a sum: 'Miscellaneous repair services', column 2: prints 123, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 122; 'Services', column 16: prints 5, rows 'Hotels, rooming hous' to 'Miscellaneous servic' add to 6; 'Services', column 17: prints 96, rows 'Hotels, rooming hous' to 'Miscellaneous servic' add to 94.

Reader’s notes

p. 210. Grid is 17 columns: stub, "All cases", eight C-case columns, four R-case columns, and UD/AC/UC. The three rightmost headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") occupy the top two heading bands with their code letters (UD, AC, UC) in a third band below a short rule; the other headings are repeated down into that third band. The stub heading carries a small raised marker that reads as a 3 ("Industrial group^3"); it is slightly blurred and could conceivably be a raised 2. No footnote text appears on this crop — the footnote block and the remainder of the table (the nonmanufacturing industry groups and the grand total) fall below the crop, which ends just under the "Manufacturing" subtotal rule. A faint ink speck sits in the CG column at the first printed line of the "Measuring, analyzing, and controlling instruments..." row; it is page dirt, not a digit — that cell's value is 0, printed on the row's second line with the rest of the figures. Every column was cross-footed against the "Manufacturing" subtotal and every row against its "All cases", "All C cases" and "All R cases" entries; all of them tie exactly, so no misprints are suspected.

p. 211. 17 columns. The header box has three bands: the spanner band (Unfair labor practice cases over 8 columns; Representation cases over 4), the band holding "All cases", "All C cases", CA-CP, "All R cases", RC-RD and the three tall right-hand headings, and a shallow third band that is ruled only under the last three columns and holds the case-type codes UD, AC, UC; the headings to the left of those occupy tall cells running down to the body, so they are repeated in all bands they span. The marker on "Industrial group^2" is a raised 2. No footnotes are printed on this crop: the body runs to the bottom edge and the table continues on the following page (the service-industry block is cut off after "Museums, art galleries, and botanical and zoological gardens", with no group subtotal for it shown here). The caption carries a raised 1 on "Fiscal Year 1988", whose footnote text is not on this image. Arithmetic cross-check: in every row except one, the C-case detail sums to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sums to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC sums to "All cases"; the two subtotal rows ("Mining" and "Transportation, communication, and other utilities") also reconcile down their columns against the member rows above them. The exception is "Miscellaneous repair services": 94 + 27 + 0 + 1 + 0 = 122, but "All cases" is printed as 123. The components there are individually confirmed by their own subtotals (71+22+0+1 = 94 and 19+2+6 = 27), so the discrepancy sits in "All cases" or in one of the small UD/AC/UC cells; all are transcribed exactly as printed, with no correction. This may be a printed misprint, or the UD or UC cell for that row may be a 1 that the scan renders as 0 - it is the one cell group on the page I would re-check against a higher-resolution scan. The 37 in the "Health services" row sits under CG (8(g) health care institution picketing), which is the only nonzero CG entry on the page; its position is confirmed both by column alignment and by the row's C-case sum. The CC value of 1 for "U.S. Postal Service" likewise reconciles (1,395+565+1 = 1,961). The "RM" column heading has a short stray mark to its right in the scan; it is printing noise, not a footnote marker. Row labels are followed by leader dots of varying length, dropped here; the label "Local and suburban transit and interurban highway passenger transportation" wraps onto two printed lines and is joined into one row.

p. 212. This crop is the final page of a table continued from the preceding page: the caption carries "—Continued" and the body begins mid-list with "Social services", so the earlier industrial groups are not on this image. The column headings are reprinted in full here, so header_rows is populated. Three heading levels are present. "All cases" and the stub "Industrial group^2" are tall headings spanning all three levels; "Unfair labor practice cases" (8 columns) and "Representation cases" (4 columns) span the top level only; the three rightmost headings ("Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases", "Unit clarification cases") span the top two levels, with their code abbreviations UD, AC, UC printed on the third level. The hyphenated line breaks in those three headings ("deauthor-ization", "Amend-ment", "certifi-cation", "clarifi-cation", "Unit clarifi-cation") have been rejoined. Indentation in the stub distinguishes levels: "Social services" and "Miscellaneous services" are flush-left detail lines, "Services" is the indented division subtotal that covers them (and the earlier service lines on the previous page), "Public administration" is an indented division line, and "Total, all industrial groups" is the grand total. The superscript 2 on "Industrial group" is a footnote marker and is recorded as ^2; footnote marker 1 appears only on the excluded caption ("Fiscal Year 1988^1"). All printed arithmetic is internally consistent and was transcribed as printed, not computed: for each row the seven C-case columns sum to "All C cases", RC+RM+RD sums to "All R cases", and All C + All R + UD + AC + UC sums to "All cases". The column totals in the "Total, all industrial groups" row could not be checked against the full table because the upper rows are on the previous page. No cells were illegible. The scan is clean; the only mildly faint glyphs are the leader dots in the stub, which are dropped per instructions.
