804 of 804 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 250. The crop cuts the table off after "Oil and gas extraction"; the table continues on the following page (further mining/non-manufacturing groups and the grand total are not on this image). The footnote marker 1 on the stub heading "Industrial group" refers to a footnote that is not printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Column layout: 17 columns — stub, "Total elections", a five-column spanner "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" (Total / AFL-CIO unions / Teamsters / Other national unions / Other local unions), three tall single columns, a five-column spanner "Valid votes cast for unions" with the same five sub-headings, then two more tall single columns. Arithmetic cross-checks all reconcile as transcribed (elections won + elections with no representative = total elections; the four union sub-columns sum to each "Total"; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes; and the 22 manufacturing detail rows sum to the "Manufacturing" line in every numeric column, including 45,975 in the last column), so no misprints are suspected. Doubtful cell: in the "Automotive and other transportation equipment" row, the "AFL-CIO unions" cell under the elections-won spanner carries a stray ink mark (a small arrow-like scribble) immediately left of the digit; the digit itself reads 4, and 4+2+1+2 = 9 matches the row's "Total", so it is transcribed as 4 with the mark treated as page noise rather than a footnote marker. Scan artifacts: the page uses a dotless "i" in many words (e.g. "Prınting", "ındustrıes"); these have been transcribed with normal "i". Several row labels are followed by long leader-dot runs, which have been dropped.

p. 251. Continuation page: no footnote block is printed on this crop, so the text of footnote 1 (marker on the stub heading "Industrial group^1") is not available here. The crop also ends mid-table — "Miscellaneous repair services" is the last row and sits flush against the bottom edge; the table continues on the following page. Row structure: horizontal rules set off "Mining" (row 2) and "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" (row 14) as group-total lines, and they are printed indented relative to the detail lines; their labels are transcribed as printed. Doubtful cells: - "U.S. Postal Service" (stub): the scan renders the initials as "U S" with the periods not resolving; I have transcribed the conventional printed form "U.S. Postal Service". - "Miscellaneous repair services" / "Total" under "elections won by unions": the digit is preceded by a stray speck, printing as ":8"; read as 8 (consistent with 6+2+0+0 = 8 and 8+7 = 15). - "Local and suburban transit..." / "Other national unions" under "Valid votes cast for unions": printed as ". 0" with a leading speck; read as 0. - "Motor freight transportation and warehousing" and "Water transportation": stray pen-like strokes cross the right-hand columns ("48", "2,480", "31"); the digits themselves are legible as transcribed. Arithmetic consistency: every row's internal checks hold (elections won + elections with no representative = total elections; the four union subcategories = union total, for both elections and votes; union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes), and the six transportation detail lines sum exactly to the "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" line in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected; nothing was computed or corrected.

p. 252. This crop is a continuation page: the body begins mid-table with the last four detail lines of the Services division, so the "Services" subtotal row (892 elections) and the "Total, all industrial groups" row sum over rows printed on earlier pages that are not in this image. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed in full. Seventeen columns were counted from the column rules: stub, Total elections, the five "won by unions" columns, no-representative-chosen, employees eligible to vote, total valid votes cast, the five "valid votes cast for unions" columns, total votes for no union, and eligible employees in units choosing representation. Typography: the headings "Other national unions" and "Other local unions" each carry a stray ink dot before "Other" in both heading blocks (a leftover from the rule/leader dots); these are not footnote markers and were dropped. A stray dot also appears above the "0" of the Museums row in the "Other local unions" (elections) column; it is treated as a scan speck, not a marker. In the footnote the periods of "D.C." are faint/broken in the scan, printed roughly as "D C , 1972."; it has been rendered as "D.C., 1972."; the "o" of "Washington" is partly obscured by a smudge but the word is unambiguous. All internal arithmetic checks pass as printed (component union columns sum to each "Total", won + no-representative = total elections, and union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast in every row), so no misprints are suspected.
