  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

907 of 916 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 1 cell breaks a sum: 'South Atlantic', column 17: prints 8,595, rows 'Delaware' to 'Florida' add to 8,555.

Reader’s notes

p. 244. 17 columns, two heading levels. The crop ends after the "West North Central" subtotal — the table continues on the following page with the remaining census divisions and the overall total, so no footnote text appears here even though the stub heading carries marker 1 ("Division and State^1"). Verification: every state row is internally consistent (total elections = elections won + elections with no representative; the union subtotal equals AFL-CIO + Teamsters + other national + other local in both the election and the vote panels; total valid votes = votes for unions + votes for no union), and all four division subtotals (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) equal the sum of their member states in all 16 numeric columns. No misprints detected. Minor scan artifacts, none affecting values: a small ink speck sits just left of the "2" in the Missouri row, "Other local unions" (elections) column, and a similar speck appears in the blank stub below "West North Central"; both are read as dirt, not digits or markers. The leader-dot runs after several state names are broken by scan dropout (e.g. "Ohio.. ... . ..", "Pennsylvania.. ..") but the names themselves are legible.

p. 245. 17 columns: stub plus 16 numeric columns. The stub heading carries a raised footnote marker ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop (it appears on the earlier page of this continued table), so `footnotes` is empty. Crop boundaries: this is a continuation page. The Mountain division block begins with Montana but is cut off by the bottom of the crop after the Utah row, so the division's remaining states and the "Mountain" division total are not on this image. Verification: every column of each state block was cross-footed against its printed division total, and each row's component columns against its own totals. All agree except one cell pair: in the last column ("Eligible employees in units choosing representation"), the nine South Atlantic states as transcribed (796, 923, 791, 1,531, 465, 923, 354, 1,439, 1,333) sum to 8,555 while the printed South Atlantic total reads 8,595, a difference of 40. All other South Atlantic columns sum exactly, so either one state's tens digit in that column or the total itself is misprinted or misread at this scan resolution (a 5/9 or 3/7 confusion in the tens place is the likely candidate); values are transcribed exactly as read. Wyoming row, "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen": this cell is at the limit of legibility in the crop. It is transcribed as 0, which is consistent with the printed row (1 total election, 1 won by unions) and with the rest of the row (83 eligible to vote, 73 valid votes cast, 38 for unions all AFL-CIO, 35 for no union, 83 eligible employees in units choosing representation). If the cell is in fact blank in the print rather than a printed zero, that single cell should be "" instead; the placement of 83 under "Number of employees eligible to vote" (not under the no-representative column) is confirmed by the row's internal arithmetic. East South Central, "Other local unions" (valid-votes panel): printed with a speck between the digits; read as 870, which matches the states' sum (46 + 215 + 609 + 0). Small dash-like marks sit immediately left of some values — Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma in the valid-votes "Other local unions" column, Virginia and West Virginia in the elections "Other national unions" column, North Carolina in the elections "Other national unions" column. These are scan artifacts/fragments of the column rules, not footnote markers or minus signs, and are not transcribed. Row labels are given in correct spelling where the scan has dropped i-dots ("Distnct" is District of Columbia; "Flonda" is Florida; "Anzona" is Arizona); likewise headings ("Valid-votes cast for unions", "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions").

p. 246. The crop is the end of a table continued from the preceding page: the Mountain division's earlier States appear above Nevada on the prior page, so the first data row here (Nevada) is not the start of the table. The footnote line at the bottom is clipped by the crop edge — only the upper half of its letters is visible; I read it as transcribed, but the wording after "Bureau of the Census" is reconstructed from partial letterforms and should be re-checked against the full page. The stub column carries leader dots after every label (dropped here). Small stray ink marks sit in the stub beside "Nevada", "Guam" and "Pacific" and in the "Total votes for no union" column beside "Virgin Islands"; these are printing specks, not digits or footnote markers. All subtotal rows check out against their component States (Pacific = Washington through Guam; Outlying Areas = Puerto Rico + Virgin Islands), and the within-row union breakdowns sum to their "Total" columns throughout, so no misprints are suspected.
