  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce.

915 of 915 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 267. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall single columns ("Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast"), five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". The crop is cut off at the bottom: the table ends after the "West North Central" subtotal, and the remaining census divisions (South Atlantic onward) plus any grand total continue on a following page. No footnote text appears in the crop, so `footnotes` is empty even though the stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"); that footnote's text is presumably printed at the foot of the continuation page. The four division subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are indented in the stub and are transcribed with their own labels. Each was checked against its member states: all 16 numeric columns in all four divisions sum exactly to the printed subtotal, which strongly supports the column alignment and the digits. Scan quality is good; the only characters needing care were the 1s, which print in this font with a small flag and can resemble a comma-less 7 (e.g. Illinois "Other national unions" 12, Vermont "Teamsters" 1, North Dakota "Total votes for no union" 1). Each of these was confirmed by the division-subtotal arithmetic.

p. 268. The crop is a continuation page: the caption carries "—Continued" and the body is cut off after "Utah" at the foot of the image, so the Mountain division's remaining state(s) (e.g. Nevada) and the "Mountain" subtotal line, any following divisions, and any footnote text that would follow the table are not on this image. The stub heading carries a raised 1 ("Division and State^1"), but footnote 1's text is not printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Typesetting leaves a space in place of the digit-grouping comma in several cells; these are transcribed with commas as instructed: Maryland "4 760" (employees eligible) and "4 118" (total valid votes); South Atlantic "16 215" (valid votes cast for unions, Total); East South Central "5 485" (valid votes cast for unions, AFL-CIO unions). The scan is lightly broken in a few digits but every reading is confirmed by the table's internal arithmetic: in all 24 state rows the four union-party columns sum to the union Total, union Total plus "Total votes for no union" equals "Total valid votes cast", and the won/no-representative election counts sum to "Total elections"; all three printed division subtotals (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) equal the sums of their member states in all 16 numeric columns. Two cells whose scan is faint but whose value is fixed by those checks: Kentucky, "Number of elections in which no representative was chosen" = 25 (48 - 23), and Kentucky, "Valid votes cast for unions — Total" = 1,400 (1,123 + 192 + 85 + 0). Division subtotal rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) are printed indented and set off by rules; they are transcribed as ordinary body rows with their labels as printed. The table is a single panel, not side-by-side panels.

p. 269. This crop is the final (continuation) page of Table 15B: it opens mid-table with Nevada, the last State of the Mountain division, so the Mountain subtotal here covers States listed on the preceding page. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed. Typesetting/scan artifacts, resolved per the transcription rules: several digit-grouping commas print as bare spaces and are written as commas — Puerto Rico "3 735" -> 3,735 and Outlying Areas "3 789" -> 3,789 (Total valid votes cast), and Total row "1 923" -> 1,923 (Number of elections in which no representative was chosen). The 1-bit scan also drops most small punctuation (note the dotless i's in the headings); the footnote's internal commas/periods around "Census, U.S. Department of Commerce" are faint-to-absent in the image and have been rendered conventionally. All internal arithmetic checks pass as transcribed: in every row the "Valid votes cast for unions — Total" equals the sum of its four union columns, the Pacific line equals the sum of its six States, the Outlying Areas line equals Puerto Rico plus Virgin Islands, and the grand-total union votes (92,135) equals 65,644 + 15,353 + 3,745 + 7,393. No suspected misprints. Doubtful cells: none materially. The only low-contrast digits are Guam's "2,077"/"1,855" (Number of employees eligible to vote / Total valid votes cast) and Alaska's "1" under Valid votes cast for unions — Teamsters; both read cleanly at full resolution and are consistent with their row and column totals.
