  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

927 of 927 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 264. 17 columns. The division rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are indented subtotal rows set off by rules; their labels are transcribed without the indent. Pennsylvania, "Number of employees eligible to vote": printed as "17 973" with no visible comma (the scan appears to have dropped the comma rather than the typesetter). Transcribed as 17,973; this is confirmed by the Middle Atlantic subtotal, 19,832 + 10,135 + 17,973 = 47,940 as printed. The crop ends just below the West North Central subtotal line, so the remaining divisions of the table (South Atlantic onward) and the text of footnote 1, keyed to the stub heading "Division and State", are not on this image; footnotes is therefore empty. Every row and every division subtotal was checked arithmetically (component unions summing to the won/valid-votes totals, union + no-union votes summing to total valid votes cast, and each state column summing to its division subtotal); all checks agree with the figures as transcribed, so no misprints are suspected.

p. 265. The crop is a continuation page of Table 15A: it begins mid-table with the South Atlantic division states (no national total or earlier divisions) and is cut off at the bottom immediately after the Utah row, so the remainder of the Mountain division and its subtotal, the Pacific division, and any footnotes are not on this image. The stub heading carries a superscript footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but the footnote text itself is below the crop and is not transcribed. Rows "South Atlantic", "East South Central" and "West South Central" are indented division-subtotal lines, set off by rules. Several digits are broken by the scan but are recoverable and confirmed by arithmetic: Kentucky valid votes cast for unions, Total = 1,611; Louisiana valid votes cast for unions, Total = 836; Arkansas valid votes cast for unions, Total = 1,801; Alabama total votes for no union = 1,838 and eligible employees in units choosing representation = 1,799; Wyoming valid votes cast for unions, Other national unions = 1; Utah eligible employees in units choosing representation = 170. The East South Central cell under "Valid votes cast for unions — Other national unions" has a stray ink tick before it; the value is 113 (= 85+0+14+14). Every data row and all three division subtotals were checked for internal consistency (component elections sum to the "won by unions" total; won + no representative = total elections; union vote components sum to the union total; union total + no-union votes = total valid votes; state values sum to each division subtotal) and all agree as printed — no misprints detected.

p. 266. This is the final page of a table continued from the preceding page: the body opens with Nevada, the last State of the Mountain division, so the "Mountain" subtotal row covers States mostly printed on the earlier page. Column headings are printed on this page and are transcribed. The table has 17 printed columns (stub plus 16 numeric); the two spanner headings, "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" and "Valid votes cast for unions", each cover five columns (Total, AFL-CIO unions, Teamsters, Other national unions, Other local unions). The scan shows the characteristic dotless "i" of this printing (e.g. "Hawau" for "Hawaii", "Division and State"); State names are given in their normal spelling. All component sums I could check are internally consistent (e.g. Pacific = Washington + Oregon + California + Alaska + Hawaii + Guam in every column; Outlying Areas = Puerto Rico + Virgin Islands). No cell was illegible; the only small-print values I re-checked are Alaska's Teamsters valid votes (1) and Guam's "Eligible employees in units choosing representation" (3), both of which read clearly.
