  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce

707 of 707 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 200. The crop ends after the "West North Central" division subtotal; the table continues on following page(s) with the remaining divisions and states, and the text of footnote 1 (marker printed on the stub heading "Division and State") is not visible in this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Two small stray specks appear in the scan and were not transcribed as characters: a tick immediately left of "27" in the Vermont row (Total votes for no union column), and a dot/apostrophe-like mark immediately right of "1,799" in the Middle Atlantic row (Valid votes cast for unions: Total). Neither is a footnote marker in my reading — no corresponding footnote markers appear elsewhere on body values. All 16 data columns of every division subtotal row (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) were checked against the sum of their constituent state rows and agree exactly, which corroborates both the digits and the column alignment. Row heights are uniform; no row label wraps onto a second line.

p. 201. Continuation page of Table 15C: 17 columns. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Division and State^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop (it appears on the table's first page). The crop is cut off at the bottom: "Utah" is the last fully printed row, and the Mountain division continues below (Nevada, division subtotal, etc.) off-image. Row grouping as printed: the three indented, rule-bounded lines "South Atlantic", "East South Central" and "West South Central" are division subtotal rows and carry values; they are transcribed with their labels exactly as printed (no leading "Total"). Minor scan artifacts, none affecting the reading: a stray ink speck in the stub to the right of "District of Columbia", and a small tick mark just left of the "1" in the AFL-CIO-unions cell of the Wyoming row (the digit is clearly 1, consistent with that row's "Total" won-by-unions value of 1). All rows are internally consistent (union valid votes = sum of the four union columns; total valid votes = union votes + no-union votes), so no suspected misprints.

p. 202. This crop is a continuation page (caption ends "—Continued"): the table's earlier divisions and the first States of the Mountain division appear on the preceding page, so the first body row here (Nevada) is the last State of the Mountain division, immediately followed by its "Mountain" subtotal line. The division subtotal rows (Mountain, Pacific, Outlying Areas) and the grand total are indented in the original but are otherwise transcribed with their printed wording. In the scan the periods in "U.S." of the footnote are faint/lost (it reads "U S"); I have written them with periods. All row and column arithmetic checks out internally (division subtotals equal the sums of their States, union-vote components sum to the union totals, and union votes plus no-union votes equal total valid votes cast), so no misprints are suspected.
