  1. 1 See Glossary of terms for definitions
  2. 2 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U.S. Department of Commerce

797 of 797 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out. 2 cells break a sum: 'Nebraska', column 2: prints 104, the subtotals in columns 3 to 17 add to 103; 'West North Central', column 17: prints 20, rows 'Iowa' to 'Kansas' add to 19.

Reader’s notes

p. 169. The crop ends mid-table: the last printed row is Maryland, and the body (remaining states, divisions and the U.S. total) plus the footnote texts for markers 1 (in the caption) and 2 (on "Division and State") continue on the next page/crop. No footnote text is visible on this image, so `footnotes` is empty. Column structure: 17 columns. The stub heading "Division and State^2" and the tall headings "All cases", "All C cases", "CA"–"CP", "All R cases", "RC", "RM", "RD" span all three heading levels; "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases" each sit over one column and are resolved at the third level by the code letters UD, AC and UC. Hyphenated line breaks in the headings were repaired ("Union deauthor-/ization cases", "Amend-/ment of certifi-/cation cases", "Unit clarifi-/cation cases"). Doubtful cell — Nebraska, UC column: I read the printed character as 0, but the arithmetic argues for 1 on two independent checks. Nebraska's row components sum to 103 (83 + 19 + 1 + 0 + 0) against a printed "All cases" of 104, and the printed "All cases" of 104 is itself confirmed by the West North Central column total (375+582+1,156+33+18+104+254 = 2,522, as printed). The UC column for the division sums to 19 (4+7+8+0+0+0+0) against a printed West North Central total of 20. Both gaps close if Nebraska UC is 1. Per instruction I have transcribed the glyph as I read it (0) rather than correcting it; a reader needing this cell should re-check it on a higher-resolution scan. Every other row and every other column in the crop reconciles exactly: each state's "All cases" equals All C + All R + UD + AC + UC, each "All C cases" equals CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP, each "All R cases" equals RC+RM+RD, and the New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central and West North Central subtotals equal the sums of their member states in every column (the only exception being the Nebraska/UC cell described above). "Minnesota" is printed with a trailing leader dot ("Minnesota."); the leader has been dropped per instruction. In the Indiana row a small stray mark appears just left of 239 in the "All R cases" column; I read it as a speck or broken leader rather than a digit or footnote marker, and transcribed the value as 239 (which reconciles with Indiana's row and the East North Central column total). The four division lines (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are printed indented and set off by rules; they are transcribed as ordinary subtotal rows with their labels as printed.

p. 170. Continuation page: the table begins on an earlier page, so the "South Atlantic" total row covers states (Delaware, Maryland) printed on the previous page as well as the seven South Atlantic states shown here — its figures are correctly larger than the sum of the rows above it on this crop. The other three division totals (East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) do sum exactly to the states shown, and every state row satisfies All C = CA+CB+CC+CD+CE+CG+CP and All cases = All C + All R + UD + AC + UC, so the column assignment is well corroborated. Footnote markers 1 (in the caption) and 2 (on the stub heading "Division and State") are referenced but no footnote text is printed within this crop; it falls below the cropped area. Doubtful cells: Oklahoma / UD reads "2" with a short stray mark beneath it (scan speck); the division total of 2 for West South Central confirms the value is 2. Nevada / AC reads "0" followed by a small stray apostrophe-like mark; the Mountain total of 1 for AC (contributed by Colorado) confirms the value is 0. The three rightmost columns carry a two-tier heading (descriptive name over the code UD / AC / UC); the descriptive name is repeated in the first two heading levels and the code appears in the third, while the other column headings are repeated down into the third level since no separate sub-head is printed for them.

p. 171. The crop is a continuation page: the body begins mid-table with the Pacific division's States (Washington through Guam), so earlier divisions and the first footnote marker's anchor (the table caption, which carries marker 1) are not on this image. The column headings are reprinted here, so header_rows is filled. Header structure: three printed levels. "Unfair labor practice cases" spans the eight columns All C cases through CP; "Representation cases" spans All R cases through RD; the stub ("Division and State"), "All cases", and the columns All C cases through RD are tall headings spanning down to the bottom level, while "Union deauthorization cases", "Amendment of certification cases" and "Unit clarification cases" sit over the bottom-level abbreviations UD, AC and UC respectively. "Pacific" and "Outlying areas" are indented subtotal lines, printed below rules; their indentation is not reproduced in the labels. All cross-checks of the printed arithmetic (row components summing to All C cases, All R cases and All cases; the State rows summing to Pacific; Puerto Rico + Virgin Islands = Outlying areas) are internally consistent, so no suspected misprints. This is a 1-bit scan that drops very small marks: the dots on lowercase i are missing throughout (e.g. "Washington", "Hawaii", "California" render dotless), and periods are likewise not visible. I therefore wrote footnote 2 as "U.S. Department of Commerce"; the periods in "U.S." and any terminal periods on the two footnotes cannot be confirmed from the image. A stray ink speck sits in the blank area above the footnotes, right of center; it is not a character.
