Industrial Distribution of Representation Elections Held in Cases Closed, Fiscal Year 1984

p. 235. Crop is the first page of a multi-page table: it ends mid-body after "Oil and gas extraction" (that row sits on the bottom edge but is fully legible), so the mining/non-manufacturing section and any footnote text continue on the following page. The stub heading carries a superscript 1 reference mark, but no footnote text is printed on this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. The "Manufacturing" row is an indented subtotal set off by rules above and below; it is transcribed with its printed label only. Doubtful cell resolved: "Rubber and miscellaneous plastic products" / "Valid votes cast for unions: Total" scans as either 1,752 or 1,762 (middle digit is thick). I transcribed 1,762 because three independent arithmetic checks agree on it: its four components (1,329+298+37+98), the identity 4,285 − 2,523, and the column total 65,683 less the other 21 rows. Flagging it since this is the one cell where my reading leaned on arithmetic rather than purely on the glyph. All other cells were verified: every data row satisfies the component-sum, election-sum and vote-sum identities, and all 16 numeric columns sum exactly to the printed "Manufacturing" subtotal. No misprints found. The AFL-CIO headings are printed with an en dash ("AFL–CIO"); transcribed with a plain hyphen.

p. 236. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three tall columns ("Number of elections in which no representative was chosen", "Number of employees eligible to vote", "Total valid votes cast"), five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". The page is a "—Continued" sheet, so the table runs on past the bottom of the crop (the last row shown, "Miscellaneous repair services", sits at the image edge) and no footnote text is printed on this image; the superscript 1 marker on the stub heading "Industrial group" refers to a note that appears elsewhere. Rule lines group the body into blocks that are continued from the preceding page. Two rows are indented summary lines rather than ordinary industry rows: "Mining" (a group total, set off by rules above and below, and much larger than the "Mining and quarrying of nonmetallic minerals (except fuels)" row printed above it) and "Transportation, communication, and other utilities" (the total of the six transportation/utility rows above it — verified: 52+211+22+24+138+65 = 512, and every other column of that line also sums exactly). Their labels are transcribed as printed, without the indentation. "U.S. Postal Service": the scan renders the abbreviation with the periods very faint, reading close to "U S Postal Service"; transcribed with periods as the standard printed form. Its entire row is printed zeros. Consistency checks pass throughout: in every row, elections won + elections with no representative = total elections, the four union sub-columns sum to the union total, union votes + votes for no union = total valid votes cast, and the four vote sub-columns sum to the union vote total. No printed value appears to be a misprint. No illegible cells; the dotless-i appearance of some labels ("Mining", "Electric", "Communication") is a scan artifact of the typeface, not an alternate spelling.

p. 237. This is the final page of Table 16 (a "—Continued" page), so the body begins mid-list: the detailed service-industry rows preceding "Museums, art galleries, botanical and zoological gardens" appear on earlier pages, and the "Services" line is the subtotal closing that section (set off by a rule). Column headings are reprinted in full on this page, so they are transcribed here. Punctuation in the footnote is partly eaten by the scan: after "Source" and in "D C ," the periods/colon are faint or absent in the image; I have rendered them as the conventional "Source:" and "D.C.," — the wording itself is legible and certain. All internal arithmetic checks out as printed: for every row the four union components sum to the "Total" in both the elections block and the valid-votes block, and Total-won + no-representative = Total elections, and union votes + no-union votes = total valid votes cast. No misprints detected. Minor rendering notes: the scan's typeface renders many dotted "i" characters faintly (e.g. "Industrial", "unions"), but no value digits are ambiguous. Row labels are indented in the original for "Services", "Public administration" and "Total, all industrial groups"; indentation is not reproduced in the cell text.
