  1. 1 The states are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

913 of 913 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 219. The crop is the first part of a longer table: the body ends after the "West North Central" subtotal with an open rule, so the remaining geographic divisions and any footnote texts (including the text of marker 1 on the stub heading "Division and State") fall outside this image. footnotes is therefore empty even though a marker is printed. The division lines (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are indented subtotal rows set off by rules; they are transcribed in reading order after the states they cover. Blank spacing bands between the sections carry no label or values and are not transcribed as rows. Verification: every one of the four subtotal rows cross-foots exactly against its state rows in all 16 numeric columns, which confirms the column alignment and the digits; no arithmetic discrepancy was found anywhere on the page. Scan artifacts, none of which affect a value: a short stray horizontal mark sits just above the "Maine" stub label; a small dash/caret-shaped speck sits immediately left of "8,663" in the New Jersey row, "Number of employees eligible to vote" column (it is an ink artifact, not a footnote marker, and not part of the number); the scan renders many dotted i's faintly, so headings read as "Vahd votes" and "umons" in places — transcribed as the intended "Valid votes" and "unions". Rotated running text along the right edge is the page's running head and is excluded.

p. 220. This crop is a continuation page: no column headings are printed on it, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub + 16 data columns), counted from the vertical column rules. The table is cut off at the bottom — a rule and the start of the next geographic section appear below the "Mountain" subtotal, outside the crop; the state rows above "Delaware" (the earlier part of the South Atlantic division and the preceding divisions) are also off this crop. The region subtotal rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central, Mountain) are printed indented in the stub; their labels are transcribed as printed, without the indent. Doubtful cell: Louisiana, column 12 (the column where West South Central shows 669) prints indistinctly, the last digit reading like a broken "5"; I transcribed it as 175, and the printed division subtotal confirms it (29 + 175 + 18 + 447 = 669). All sixteen data columns of all four printed division subtotals were checked against the sum of their member state rows, and every one agrees exactly with the printed figure, so no misprints are suspected on this crop. Nothing was computed or altered; the check was used only to confirm digits and column placement.

p. 221. 17 columns: stub, "Total elections", five columns under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions", three single columns, five columns under "Valid votes cast for unions", then "Total votes for no union" and "Eligible employees in units choosing representation". This crop is a continuation page (caption reads "—Continued"): it begins mid-table with the Pacific division states, so the earlier divisions are on previous pages. Arithmetic checks all pass: each state's union-won subtotal equals its four component columns, the Pacific and Outlying areas subtotals equal the sums of their member rows in every column, and in the final total row 982+442+57+182=1,663, 45,728+13,365+3,214+13,303=75,610, 1,663+1,820=3,483 and 75,610+72,273=147,883. No misprints detected. The scan is a 1-bit image in which dots over the letter i and small periods are frequently lost (the page renders "Hawaii" and "Division" without their i-dots); I have restored normal spelling in the row labels and headings. In the footnote the abbreviation printed as "U S Department of Commerce" almost certainly carries periods ("U.S.") that dropped out in the scan; I transcribed the visible characters. The Guam row is printed with a zero in every column.
