  1. 1 The States are grouped according to the method used by the Bureau of the Census, U S Department of Commerce

925 of 925 figures sit in a row or column sum that works out.

Reader’s notes

p. 216. The crop ends just below the "West North Central" subtotal; the table continues on the following page (further census divisions and the national total), and the text of footnote 1 (marker on the stub heading "Division and State") is not printed within this crop, so `footnotes` is empty. Layout: 17 printed columns. The division subtotal rows (New England, Middle Atlantic, East North Central, West North Central) are set off by rules and indented in the stub; they are transcribed as ordinary labelled rows. All four division subtotals were checked against the sum of their member states in every one of the 16 numeric columns and all agree exactly, so no misprints are suspected. Internal consistency also holds for the union-vote breakdowns (AFL-CIO + Teamsters + other national + other local = "Valid votes cast for unions: Total") in every row, including the two rows that look unusual at a glance: Kansas (1 AFL-CIO election won but only 36 AFL-CIO votes vs. 120 Teamsters votes) and New Hampshire (41 votes under "Other national unions" with 0 under "Other local unions"). The scan has a partially cut vertical running word in the right margin beside the New York/Pennsylvania rows (the page's side running head, reading "Appendix"); it is outside the table's rightmost column rule and is not transcribed. Image quality is good; no cell was illegible or doubtful.

p. 217. 17 columns. The stub heading carries footnote marker 1 ("Division and State ^1"), but no footnote text is printed on this crop — it belongs to the first page of this continued table, so `footnotes` is empty. Crop boundary: the page continues below. A ruled line and the start of a new section band appear at the very bottom edge beneath the "West South Central" subtotal row, so at least one further division block (Mountain/Pacific states) is cut off. Doubtful cell: Alabama, "Teamsters" column under "Number of elections in which representation rights were won by unions" — a small isolated speck of ink sits just left of the printed 0. It is almost certainly a scanning artifact or a stray period rather than a footnote marker or a digit, since the column sums to the printed East South Central subtotal of 25 (8+16+0+1) only with 0 there. Transcribed as plain `0`. All 16 numeric columns were cross-checked against the three printed subtotal rows (South Atlantic, East South Central, West South Central) and every one of the 48 sums agrees exactly with the printed subtotal, so no misprints were detected. Row-label hyphenation: none of the state labels wrap. Headings were rejoined across their printed line breaks and end-of-line hyphens repaired ("repre- sen- tation" → "representation", "em- ployees" → "employees", "Teams- ters" → "Teamsters", "elec- tions" → "elections").

p. 218. The crop is the final page of a table continued from earlier pages: no column headings are printed on this image, so header_rows is empty. The grid has 17 columns (stub plus 16 numeric), counted from the vertical column rules; a heavier rule separates columns 1-7 from columns 8-16, and the body is organized in regional blocks (the indented rows "Mountain", "Pacific" and "Outlying areas" are the subtotal lines for the state rows printed above each of them). Arithmetic cross-check as a column-alignment test: all 16 columns of "Mountain" equal the sum of its eight states, all 16 columns of "Pacific" equal the sum of its six entries, and all 16 columns of "Outlying areas" equal Puerto Rico plus Virgin Islands. No discrepancies found, so each value is confidently placed under its printed column. The grand-total row could not be checked against this page alone because the preceding regions are on earlier pages. Doubtful/notable cells: in the "Virgin Islands" row there is a small stray horizontal mark in the gutter immediately to the left of 170 (column 8); it is a scan artifact, not a minus sign or footnote marker, and is not transcribed. The scan drops many periods and the dots of lowercase i's ("Wyoming", "New Mexico", "Arizona", "California", "Hawaii", "Puerto Rico", "Virgin Islands" all show dotless i's); labels are transcribed with normal spelling. In the footnote the abbreviation prints as "U S" and no sentence-final period is legible, so it is transcribed as it appears rather than normalized to "U.S." No footnote markers appear on any value or row label in this crop.
